Boredbrain Music Optx v2, new 8-in/8-out ADAT interface module for Eurorack

Knobcon 2024: Boredbrain Music Optx v2 is a new 10HP bi-direction 8-in/8-out DC-coupled ADAT interface module for Eurorack.

At Superbooth 24, Boredbrain Music unveiled various new expanders (DB25, TRS, and IO) for the powerful Xcelon mixer. I reported on this in May in writing and video. At the same time, the company showed a preview of the new version of its beloved ADAT interface module Optx.

Last week at Knobcon 2024, the time came. Boredbrain Music released the module.

Boredbrain Music Optx v2

In recent months, ADAT has become a topic in Eurorack. First, the Datanoise Octawave/Scale4 bundle, then the new Expert Sleepers ES-10, and now another one with the new Bordbrain Music Optx v2.

The new Optx v2 is a “pro-quality” DC-coupled ADAT light pipe converter for Eurorack synthesizers. The developers promise that the module can encode and decode eight analog inputs/outputs. with extremely low noise.

This is possible thanks to high-performance input buffers and premium Cirrus Logic analog-to-digital converters.

Precise DC coupling and the switchable input mode (in pairs) makes possible that you can use the module for audio or CV applications. For the latter, the developers say you get a near-zero offset.

Then, a clever addition of Boredbrain Music Optx v2 is the internal sample clock, which permits for one-way operation without ADAT input and standalone interconnection of two Optx modules. On top, each channel output has a dual LED indicating the signal strength and polarity.

Areas Of Application

Boredbrain Music Optx v2 is a very handy module. If you use a large interface with ADAT connectivity, it opens many doors on the easy connectivity. Once connected, it add virtually limitless options to your rack.

You can use it as an audio interface extension in your rack with which you can record your modular straight in your DAW. Another usage is to process computer audio with your Eurorack system. Route out audio and process it with your favorite filters, effects, and more.

Also possible is to route out virtual CV signals from Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio to your modular system using the module. This gives you complex modulators without having to buy two or three new modules.
