Eowave Portail is a new MIDI-to-CV interface module for Eurorack, featuring a fully configurable engine with dynamic gates, LFOs, and more.

Back in February 2024, Eowave announced the Portail, a super exciting 8-channel MIDI-to-CV interface measuring only 5 HP and packed with features. It’s like a multi-function module paired with a MIDI-to-CV interface.

After 2 years in development, it is now available. When I was looking for a MIDI-to-CV interface for my super compact travel case in December, it wasn’t available. I grabbed a used sequencer instead. I think I’ll upgrade the case to this one; it will give me more space.

Eowave Portail is available now for 199€.

Update

Update from February 20, 2024

If you want to work with your Eurorack Synthesizer with MIDI and Ableton Live, Bitwig, or the computer in general, avoiding a MIDI to CV interface is difficult. This is because it brings MIDI into the rack but also opens up other options.

Part of my Eurorack system is the big Endorphin.es Shuttle Control, a Swiss-army knife-style module. This has been on the market for over 7 years and is slowly getting old.

Here, too, the time has not stopped, and such modules have become more powerful and compact in the last few years. The French developer Eowave is a perfect example with its new 5HP interface.

Eowave Portail

Portail is a new, 5HP, flexible, configurable MIDI-to-CV interface with eight CV and dynamic gate outputs. Next to this, it has a minijack MIDI-TRS input, a USB-C device port, and two buttons for the menu and mode.

Converting MIDI to 1v/oct and gate is a breeze for the module. Even in different modes, polyphony is also possible. But it can do much more than just the traditional MIDI-to-CV/gate duties.

Portail ships with a web configurator that lets you set each CV and gate output individually. For example, you can use it to create drum stacks for triggering with successive gates or dynamic gates where the gate level reacts to velocity.

Then, it can output MIDI clock signals to sync your Eurorack system with other gear – very practical.  It can also create internal envelopes and LFOs with MIDI CC controllable parameters.

Further, it allows you to add various filter effects, including gate probability, scale quantizer, and more.

First Impression

A very exciting MIDI-to-CV interface module. The compact 5HP design makes it particularly interesting. Plus, it has tons of features. For the asking price, it looks like a no-brainer MIDI-to-CV interface. Very tempting.

Eowave Portail is available soon for 199€.

  1. Ooh, very interesting – i wonder how it compares to the FH-2 – does it supply power via USB? 8 CV and gates and usb c as well as TRS MIDI is excellent!

From the description you gave i think it generates clock – or does it just transmit clock from an external source?

Eowave still doesn’t have it on their site
how would you set a specific BMP rate with no knob or screen?

    • I don’t think that it powers 🙂

From the description you gave i think it generates clock – or does it just transmit clock from an external source? It’s a customizable MIDI to CV interface, means you can tweak every channel in a web application. I don’t have the module here but how it should transmit clocks from MIDI like your DAW or generate clocks.

how would you set a specific BMP rate with no knob or screen? in the web editor 🙂
