Intellijel Stomp builds a bridge between Eurorack modules and effects pedals

The Intellijel Stomp module lets you integrate your favorite effects pedals into your Eurorack system with send/return sockets, and more.

Intellijel showed a nice creative stereo delay effect with the Sealegs with almost endless possibilities this weekend. You can also take a different route and integrate your favorite effect pedals into the modular world. For this, you need an IO module that connects the two worlds. Important for getting the right levels, as guitars have other signals than Eurorack or synths.

Some manufacturers offer interface modules with Line to Eurorack level conversion etc. I use the Befaco InAmp and Output modules for integrating effects. Intellijel now also offers its own solution for this with the new Stomp module.

The developers promise that the Stomp module removes the barrier between Eurorack and stompboxes. It enables modular players to interact with the impressive assortment of delays, choruses, flangers, phasers, fuzz boxes, tremolos, wah-wahs, amp simulators, compressors, and pitch shifter pedals available to guitarists.

Stomp features Neutrik 1/4″ TS connectors for the SEND/RETURN and TRS for the Expression interface.  The pedal supports both instrument and level levels via front panel switch. You get independent controls for each of these functions, including a dry/wet mix control.

Signals arriving at Stomp’s RETURN jack pass through a Class A triode emulator, allowing for some tube-like overdrive at high gain setting. SEND output is normalled to RETURN input so even without 1/4″ cables you can route Eurorack signals through the FET stage for coloring.

Noticeable on the pedal is that is only designed for mono setups. A single input, send, return, and expression input. So, if you want to work with stereo pedals like the Strymons, Stomp reaches its limits. Or can you can daisy chain it, or do you need to take two?

Hidden Goodies

The module has exciting extras that are not directly recognizable. Stomp’s RETURN circuit, for example, can be used as a “direct box” for connecting any instrument. Or you can use the same socket as a piezo picket preamp for acoustic instruments.

Stomp is also an active “re-amping” device to play pre-recorded track back through guitar amplifiers or pedals. There is also a phase inversion switch for the return signal, great for effects that invert the phase. Plus, all inputs have a minimum RF interference protection.

Then, it also hosts an internal multi-wave LFO with rate control that can be routed to the expression pedal input. Thus, you can modulate the expression pedal input of your guitar pedal with an LFO. Alternatively, you can patch any other modulation source into the dedicated expression input to override the LFO.

Further, the Stomp is also a guitar to Eurorack gate opener. It allows you to connect the guitar signal to the return and use the signal with Eurorack modules like filters, effects, and more.

First Impression

An exciting IO module from Intellijel. I particularly like that they follow the path with return/send and expression. On top of that, you can couple the expression pedal input with Eurorack modulations. That’s neat. It is a pity, however, that this is a purely mono module.

Intellijel Stomp is available soon for $199/199€.
