Roland infuses with firmware 2.1 a full pack of vintage Synthesizer sounds into its Fantom workstation thanks to the new Model Expansions support (JX-8P, Jupiter-8, Juno-106 & SH-101).

In September 2019 Roland presented its new Fantom Synthesizer workstation generation in the Abbey Road Studios in London. All three models use Roland’s latest ZEN Core engine which is available in hardware as well as software format. Since the official release, Roland has constantly released major updates for its synth workstation. Update 2.0 was the biggest so far with multi-sampling, new effects, and more.

Today the adventure continues with the Fantom firmware update 2.1 and it is one that all users will love, guaranteed. It even looks like a late Christmas present.

The Fantom 2.1 firmware introduces full support for Roland’s Model Expansions. These transform the Fantoms into completely new instruments with their own sound character, range of functions, and individual preset sounds. The technology is reminiscent of Plug-Out, but further developed. Model expansions are basically emulations of well-known vintage Roland synthesizers that recreates all the characteristics of the respective devices in small details.

There are currently four available from Roland Cloud: JX-8P, Jupiter-8, Juno-106, and SH101. I think I don’t have to explain further what they do. The names say it clearly and everyone will know the sounds of these legendary instruments. You can load all ME onto the Fantom and switch between these in seconds.

One thing is sure, the Model Expansion support extends the sound spectrum of the Fantom series extremely. Alone as a classic emulation or in combination with other sounds, the possibilities are endless.

From rare and sought-after classics like JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, SH-101 & JX-8P, Model Expansions give you unprecedented access to the historic and ever-evolving world of Roland synthesizers
