Tape Fiasco is a new, powerful experimental time-based FX plugin by Jonas Eriksson, and the best part is that it’s free to download.

In recent years, in the age of the best recording option we ever had, the good old tape has experienced a significant resurgence. Numerous tape plugins have emerged, emulating the warmth and lo-fi character of these devices. But what happens when tape goes completely wild?

Jonas Eriksson has released Tape Fiasco, a multi-FX plugin that explores the wilder side of tape. The amazing thing: this comprehensive processor is free to download.

Tape Fiasco is a new creative effects plugin for macOS and Windows. Jonas Eriksson designed a very unusual UI for Tape Fiasco that takes some getting used to. The engine is fun and wildly experimental.

Tape Fiasco has three distinct time-based effects: stretch, varispeed, and stutter. Each effect can be used independently or in wild combinations, with configurable signal routing between them.

Stretch is a granular time-stretching processor that captures your audio into a buffer and plays it back using overlapping grains. It gives you control over various parameters.

This offers independent control of playback speed and pitch, as well as control over grains, scatter, reverse, and a freeze option.

Then, the stutter FX also offers a wide range of controls. It captures audio slices and repeats them rhythmically, with extensive control over timing, pitch manipulation, filtering, and probability-based variation.

It’s exciting that Jonas Eriksson gives users the option to delve deep into the pattern with more sophisticated parameters, such as pattern variation, probability, retrigger, gate, and more.

Next to this is the varispeed effect that emulates tape machine speed manipulations. It’s also fully tweakable, with an impressive set of controls, including wow/flutter modulation, tape-stop effects, scratch control, and analog-style saturation/compression.

Jonas Eriksson says that Tape Fiasco works as a sound design processor but also as a real-time performance tool. It has everything you need, including tempo-synchronized operation, envelope follower modulation, and more.

First Impression

Congratulations to the developer. Tape Fiasco is a very exciting multi-FX plugin that enables wild, experimental sound design. Some developers would charge money for this, but it’s a free plugin. Thanks for this.

The only thing one could slightly criticize is the UI, which is weird, but you get used to it, and it’s fun.

Jonas Eriksson Tape Fiasco is available for free and runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
