Thonk Double Bubble is a new 16HP dual multimode analog filter module with neat additions like feedback and cross-modulation.
The British shop Thonk is a familiar name among DIY synth enthusiasts. For some time now, the team has also been developing modules under the Thonk Synth brand. In September, I reported on the Triple Mod, a feature-packed 3-channel modulation hub.
With the Double Bubble, Thonk is now showcasing her eighth own module. It’s a multimode filter with lovely additions.
Thonk Double Bubble
Double Bubble is a new 16HP dual multimode analog filter for Eurorack. First off, I really like the panel design of the Double Bubble, just like the other Thonk modules—classic but stylish—great job.
Thonk promises that the new dual multimode filter excels at traditional filter duties as well as for much deeper dives.
Each channel features an analog filter core that can operate in one of four possible modes: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or notch. The input of channel A is normalled to channel B, so it’s easy to create a stereo filter patch, using a mono sound source.
On each channel, you have an independent cutoff and resonance control. The latter also offers switchable compensation to preserve more of the low end. The various routing configurations make the filter very versatile.
Double Bubble can operate as a dual-mono filter, as a stereo filter, or in serial and parallel configurations. This allows you to create more complex filtering effects, like notch phasing effects.
Additionally, you have a spacing control, offering sound design options that can range from formant-like filtering.
Feedback & Cross Modulation
Two highlights of the Thonk Double Bubble are its built-in feedback and cross-mod circuits.
The feedback circuit is controlled by a knob that lets you set the positive and negative phases. On the other side, the cross modulation (XMod) has dedicated pots for each channel. Engage these features, and you get deep interaction between the two channels.
This gives you subtle harmonic enhancements at low settings or lovely, extreme, self-modulating textures with higher knob positions. These features, in particular, transform the dual filter into a very unique sound design shaping tool.
On the connection side, you have a stereo input and output on two 3.5mm mono sockets, and a CV option for all parameters.
The dedicated V/OCT inputs for each channel allow the filters to function as FM oscillators or tone sources when pushed into self‑oscillation. Further, Double Bubble features LED indicators that offer visual feedback on modulations and modes.
First Impression
Following the exciting Triple Mod from September, here’s another lovely module. The wide selection of filter modes and options, such as Cross Mod/Feedback, makes the Double Bubble a mighty dual filter for beginner and advanced Eurorack users.
It’s a shame this filter is only for DIY enthusiasts; otherwise, it might have found its way into my rack.
Thonk Double Bubble is available now as a full DIY kit for £154.17 (excl VAT).
