Behringer Skies is a new affordable clone of the Mutable Instruments Clouds texture Synthesizer module, and Rings clone around the corner.

For several years, Behringer has been working on cloning many of the legendary Mutable Instruments modules and offering them at a fraction of the original price. There are also some available, including Brains (Plaits), Chaos (Marbles), Stages (Steps), and more.

Clouds into Rings will soon be available in the Behringer version. Behringer has released Skies, a clone of the legendary Mutable Instruments Clouds texture Synthesizer module.

Behringer Skies

Skies is a new granular/reverb module based on the legendary Mutable Instruments Clouds.

Like the original, Behringer Skies is capable of creating epic textures and soundscapes by combining multiple overlapping, delayed, transposed, and enveloped segments of sound taken from the audio recording buffer. And all this audio processing can be done in a very hands-on way.

Behringer decided to keep the original 18HP size of the module. I think it’s a shame, as they could have built a more compact version with extras. It operates in mono and stereo with selectable resolution from 8-bit/16 kHz to 16-bit/32 kHz.

Skies has all the best-known hardware controls of the original, including position, size, pitch, in gain, density, texture, and blend. The parameters also have CV control, but without attenuators like those found in advanced clones from other companies, such as Tunefish Modular.

Unlike MI Clouds, Behringer Skies features a front-panel USB-C port for easy firmware upgrades to the module.

There’s another clone of a famous MI module in the pipeline. If you look at the official video, you can see the Behringer MI Rings clone in the rack. It’s not quite visible in the picture, but the connections (strum, odd, even…).

At the end of the video, Patrick from Behringer also mentions another upcoming module that fits perfectly with Clouds. Yeah, so the Behringer Rings into Clouds edition is incoming.

First Impression

It was to be expected that Behringer would release a Clouds clone. It was only a matter of time before it happed. I think it’s a shame that they didn’t expand the module with attenuators or other options.

Behringer Skies will be available for $119/105€.
