WIMS Woodsynth 4.0 is a major free update for its multi-layer, multi-engine MPE Synthesizer with a new tube oscillator and more.
Four years ago, WIMS (Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio) released the WoodSynth, a multi-timbral Synthesizer for iOS and macOS. Over the last years, the synth has increasingly evolved into a powerful multi-timbral and multi-synthesis synth.
FM synthesis was added to the virtual analog and sample engine in version 2.0. Subsequent updates added wavetable tweaking functions, deeper sequencing, and a better UI. WIMS Woodsynth 4.0 is now available for download and is even more comprehensive.
WIMS Woodsynth 4.0
Woodsynth 4.0 is a free update for existing users on macOS and iOS. It adds a new tube oscillator based on the tube modeling technology in the WoodValvet tube saturation effects app/plugin.
Drive, bias, and tube type parameters allow for smooth harmonic changes and to morph the waveforms from sine to square wave. An optional integrator circuit after the oscillator to generate sawtooth waveforms. Various sources can also modulate the drive control (oscillator’s LFO, AUX ADAR, or MIDI input).
Another major addition in WIMS Woodsynth 4.0 is a new convolution reverb based on the WoodVerberator reverb app. It has reverb time (0 .. 10s), and damping parameters. To simplify the workflow, the reverbs now have a new reverb-type dropdown menu and their own UI panel.
The reverb section now has independent highpass, lowpass, and saturation parameters and is no longer shared with the delay. Like the new oscillator’s drive, the convolution reverb is also modulable – the reverb sent parameter with the general LFO and by keyboard pressure/aftertouch.
Woodsynth 4.0 also adds samples per note, giving notes without a sample new modes to generate sound from existing samples.
Further, it ships with a new preset browser with 10+ fresh sounds and a setlists option. Other additions are manual sequencer triggering, note values for the sequencer, and improved MIDI learn indications. The latter now indicates when a MIDI CC is already used.
First Impression
This is an excellent free update for existing users. Woodsynth has been on the market for four years, and the developer still offers free updates, which is very welcome.
WIMS Woodsynth 4.0 is a free update for existing iOS and macOS users. Woodsynth on iOS is available now for 17,99€, and the macOS version for 89,99€.
