Moog ‘s award-winning Model 15 Synthesizer app is now universal for iOS & macOS including AUv3 and is probably the starting point for many other ports.
With the release of macOS Big Sur and the first M1 Macs last year, a new era began for Mac computers but also for the iOS music world. Thanks to the same ARM architecture, iOS apps also run on M1 Macs. Many developers have already delivered compatibility and workflow updates for their existing apps. Whether an app is officially supported for macOS depends on the developer. They can limit the app to iOS or make it universal with a click.
It gets even better. If an app also has AUv3 support, you can also run it as a plugin on macOS Big Sur, but currently only in Logic Pro. Since this is the only big DAW with AUv3 integration on macOS besides the Drambo groove box which can also host AUv3 apps.
Moog Music has recently published a major update for its amazing Model 15 Synthesizer app with macOS support. Compatible with both Intel and M1 macs. After Virsyn AddStation, Drambo … this is the next big app to find its way onto macOS. I think it will be a signpost for many more iOS ports.
Moog Model 15 App
The Moog Model 15 Synthesizer App is a classic for iOS. It is a lot of fun, is intuitive to use, educational, and sounds extremely good. The developers have recreated each facet of the Moog Model 15 to ensure the power and transcendent sound quality of each module remains intact. The legendary Moog 932 oscillator, 904A low pass filter, 907 fixed filter bank, all special and unique features of the original have been recreated with great attention to detail.
The app is not only an emulation of the legendary Moog Modular Model 15 but also goes beyond the vintage device by offering new modern features. Both monophonic and 4-voice polyphony, playable via 4 expressive controllers, total MIDI integration, audio & MIDI bridges, looping recorder module, and more. The synthesis has also been nicely expanded with a new extension cabinet. This includes additional amplifiers and voltage-controlled reversible attenuators that opens up the sound design possibilities.
Mac Compatibility
The app uses Apple Metal, an advanced graphics engine that ensures that all zooming, panning, and modular patching throughout the application feels completely natural, something that would have been impossible otherwise. These are no marketing phrases. Many users of the app can confirm this. Everything works smoothly, no stuttering, zooming works perfectly… a brilliant user experience.
As I said, the app is now universal. To use it on your mac you need at least macOS 11.0.1 Big Sur. M1 or Intel doesn’t matter. The app runs on both architectures which is a big plus point. Once downloaded, the app also automatically installs the AUv3 plug-in version. AUv2 aka AU is not the same as AUv3. Logic Pro is currently the only DAW on macOS that supports the format. In Ableton Live, Cubase … you get an error message because they only support AUv2. All M1 users can alternatively use Drambo that supports AUv3 hosting too.
MacOS AppStore Bug
There is currently a bug in the Apple Mac App Store. If you already have it for iOS, it will show you “purchase me for $29.99 USD.” You need to try to purchase the app, then Apple will say that you already have the app and can download it for free.
The Model 15 app is just the beginning of many very cool iOS AUv3 apps that will be available for macOS in the future. This step will probably rethink many developers and dare to take the macOS step. I really hope that we will see the great Model D app too on macOS in the future.
Moog Model 15 universal update (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch & macOS) is free for existing customers. The app is available now for $29.99 USD.

Wow that’s awesome ! Looking forward to playing around with this when I make the jump to OS 11.
“Free for existing users” ? It does not seem so. I have it on iPad. 32 Euro asked for it on my M1 mini.
it’s an Apple Mac AppStore glitch. The Moog developer just messages me that users need to try up to 4 times until Apple says: free.
Can anybody please make a short video? Pleazzze
I want the animoog.
a video for what reason? any problems?
Just simple cause i didn’t find no videos yet and like to see how it works and look. My mac has to wait for big sur until my audiointerface is compatible.
