AudioThing RES-09 is a new authentic emulation of the Roland RS-09 organ and string machine for macOS, Linux, Windows and iOS.
Vintage music gear is very popular. The developer AudioThing also loves retro sounds, evident in its constantly growing portfolio of plugins and apps. Recently, an emulation of the insider known JEN SX1000 Synthesizer was released.
For its latest plugin, the developers once again travel back in time—this time to Japan. AudioThing has today released RES-09, an emulation of the Roland RS-09 organ and string machine from 1979.
AudioThing RES-09
AudioThing’s new recreation captures the original character of the Roland RS-09 while offering modern enhancements. It consists of two independent sections: organ and strings.
Both sections of the AudioThing RES-09 emulate the top octave Synthesizer circuit, featuring 12 oscillators for the upper octave notes, with ‘octave divider’ circuits generating lower octaves.
The organ section can mix four square waves (8, 4, 2, 1), while the strings section uses a saw-like waveform generated by layering multiple squares at different octaves and volumes. You can create the perfect mix between these two layers using the bias.
In the dedicated tune area, you can fine-tune each oscillator separately. Both organ and strings sections offer a two-mode tweakable ensemble effect, adding movement and stereo depth. It’s a BBD-based ensemble chorus emulation, similar to the classic Roland Juno 6/60 chorus, but with a distinctive sound.
Then, you have a tone shape, a customizable multi-waveform vibrato effect, and a tweakable AR envelope with three modes (standard, keep, kill).
Further, AudioTHing RES-09 features four freely routable creative effects: Space Echo-based tape echo, vintage spring reverb, overdrive, and vintage analog-style phaser. Each effect has three simple parameters for fine-tuning. Handy, there is also an FX on/off switch.
Like the previous AudioThing plugins, it has a resizable screen, brightness and contrast controls, and a preset system with a patch randomizer.
First Impression
Musicians who love the sound of the Roland RS-09 will get their money’s worth here. A direct comparison to the original is still missing, but the plugin sounds very good. It’s positive to see that it’s a cross-platform plugin and an iOS app. So everyone who likes it can use it.
AudioThing RES-09 is available now for an introductory price of 29€ instead of 59€. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows. The iOS version with AUv3 support is on the AppStore for an introductory price of $8,99.
