RYK Modular Envy Machine is a quad modulation module for Eurorack with various mod modes, including a knob recorder.

In early October, SynthFest UK took place in Sheffield. It featured many European and British developers. One was RYK Modular, developer of the M185 sequencer, Algo FM oscillator, and others.

The developer had a teaser version of its new mighty modulation module. It is called the Envy Machine, and RYK Modular finished it before Christmas.

Envy Machine is not just a simple new modulator generator; it’s an entire modulation hub. It has 12HP and offers four independent and fully customizable channels.

Each channel can host a modulator mode set with a button press. You can choose between various envelope modes (ADSR, AD, and multi-shape AD LFO), a random voltage generator, and a knob recorder that captures voltage control movements. And they have a wide range.

The envelopes range from 1.5ms to slow 4min, the LFOs from 88hz to super slow 7 minutes, and the random from 2kHz to 2 minutes.

According to RYK Modular, the Envy Machine’s LFO generator has slippery slopes. These are continuously variable waveshapes between LOG, EXPO, sine, trapezoid, and square.

The highlight of the module, in my opinion, is the knob recorder with which you can automate parameters and thus generate very complex modulations. Not one but four channels at the same time.

Visualizing the parameters, settings, and channels with four LED rows is particularly catchy and looks intuitive. There are four attenuverter knobs for controlling the ins and outs in either bipolar or unipolar.

Each channel has a dedicated gate input and CV out on the connectivity side. The envelopes produce 0/8V or 8V, and the LFO/random 0/8V (unipolar) or -5V/+5V (bipolar).

As a neat add-on, each RYK Modular Envy Machine channel has a mod input with a voltage range from -5V to +5V. With an external CV, you can control any parameter (time, level, waveshape, etc.).

First Impression

The Envy Machine is one of the year’s modulation highlights. It aroused my interest right from the first teaser at SynthFest UK. It offers a lot, takes up little space, and is very easy to use. I’m looking forward to more demos.

RYK Modular Envy Machine is available now for $289,95
