Make Noise Multimod is a new, unique modulation module for Eurorack that creates eight complex modulation signals from just one input signal.
In every Eurorack system, you will undoubtedly find at least one envelope and LFO with classic shapes. These are classics in every modular system. What if you could make many more complex ones out of this one signal?
Make Noise has thought about this for their new Multimod module. Take one signal and turn them into eight complex ones.
Make Noise Multimod
Spoiler: the new Multimod is not the new Make Noise Math. It’s a new 8-channel complex modulation module with a unique approach. You can get eight varied, complex mod signals for your Eurorack system by inputting a single control signal.
According to Make Noise, the new module is built on brand-new DSP hardware developed for the New Universal Synthesizer System. It offers eight high-resolution outputs, with signal input and output ranges approaching the upper limits of the analog eurorack modular system.
Impressive is that all inputs and outputs can handle a 20V range at 10/-10V, which greatly exceeds the typical 0-5V CV input ranges on digital modules.
Make Noise Multimod has only one input but does a lot with it. It copies your single control signal in eight new signals. However, these are not simple copies; they are the starting point for wild modulation signals. You can modify these new signals by tweaking their weighted phase, variable speed, and time.
The developers say the result is a flock of related modulation signals derived from the same single input.
Controls
Multimode has 10HP and offers various controls, using knobs and buttons.
Phase sets the spacing of the signal copies in time, weighted by channel. Each progressive channel gets more out of phase with the original signal and each other. Spread allows for vari-speeding the copies by different amounts, with each getting progressively faster or slower than the original signal.
Time determines the range of time captured at the input and, therefore, the depth of modulation across copies of the input signal when Phase and Spread are manipulated.
Further, the Make Noise Multimod includes tempo, hold, and reset features. Plus, you can find a variety of read shapes for temporal rearrangement of the input signals.
You can use the module as a 1 to 8 modulation hub. That’s not all. Alternatively, you can turn it in LFO mode by ignoring the input channel. In this case, Multimod becomes an 8-channel LFO with the same manipulation options.
First Impression
Make Noise often adds twists to its modules, whether oscillators, effects, or modulators. This can also be found in the Multimod. It is a fascinating take on a modulation module. When they mentioned an LFO mode, I immediately thought of the DivKid øchd, which also outputs eight offset LFOs.
Since I’m currently looking for more modulation power for my rack, this could end up in the shopping cart. I need to look closer at the upcoming videos, but I enjoy what the module can do.
Make Noise Multimod is available now for $349.
