TeMuFra Colours is a new free 8-voice, fully-tweakable, easy-to-use additive Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows.
The first synthesis steps are usually done with classic subtractive synthesis. With two or more oscillators, filters, etc. Then, you slowly increase the level and synthesis options. Only later do we deal with concepts of FM or additive synthesis.
TeMuFra, a new developer, unveiled Colours, a free additive Synthesizer plugin with which you can explore this world.
TeMuFra Colours
In additive synthesis, you start with nothing and craft your sound by combining multiple sine waves of different levels and frequencies. The new TeMuuFra Colours Synthesizer also follows this concept.
As the plugin’s name suggests, it’s all about colors. TeMuFra has color-coded the different levels of sine waves (Scarlett, Red, Brown, etc.) that can be mixed. Each section has a mixer control and can be opened up to allow you to craft the sine waves further.
If you take an init patch, you start with a simple sine wave. Mix the individual levels, and your sine wave evolves into a complex waveform. The built-in wave scope illustrates the result in real-time. Additionally, you can mix four noise levels into the waveform to make it even more unique.
Then, there are classic modulations in the form of two envelopes and two multi-wave LFOs. The envelopes are extensive and offer Delay Attack Hold Decay Sustain Release (DAHDSR) characteristics with customizable attack, decay, and release slopes.
The LFO, on the other side, is classic, syncable and offers various waveforms, including random. An 8-slot modulation matrix manages the connections between modulators and destinations. The neat is that you can modulate individual partial sections of the color-coded sinewaves.
TeMuFra Colours doesn’t feature filters and built-in effects in the current version. Maybe in a future version. The developer ships the plugin with a wide range of presets, and the files have to be downloaded separately.
I noticed something during the download process. The macOS version is mistakenly referred to as iOS, but it’s a Mac version.
First Impression
At first glance, it looks like a solid, free additive synth plugin. However, I’m not that super impressed with the sound. It’s good, but it’s nothing super exquisite. There are much better additive synths, but they cost money. Nevertheless, it’s a nice free synth that can still grow with enough support from the community.
TeMuFra Colours is a free download and runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
