discoDSP has ported their authentic Clavia Nord Lead 2 Synthesizer emulation Discovery to iPadOS with AUv3 support.

At the end of August, discoDSP published a major update for the popular OB-Xd Synthesizer plugin. The iPadOS version, for example, received a completely new version with many features, including a new look, better features, and more.

Today, I have received exciting news from the developer. With Discovery, another Synthesizer from his portfolio has now made it onto iOS, more precisely onto iPadOS.

There can be confusion. discoDSP has ported the Discovery Synthesizer to iPadOS, not the Discovery Pro, which has more advanced features.

Like the desktop plugin, Discovery AUV3 is an authentic emulation of the iconic Clavier Nord Lead 2 Synthesizer. The core is multi-timbral and offers four layers per patch, which can be stacked.

Each patch features two multi-wave oscillators (sine, triangle, sawtooth, pulse, and noise), various filters (2 dB/oct 2-pole lowpass, 24dB/oct 4-pole lowpass/bandpass/highpass, formant…), and modulation. The latter includes two ADSR envelopes (filter, amp) and multi-wave LFOs.

Then, you can use a built-in multi-FX processor with four algorithms: chorus, phaser, panning delay, and gate. It also includes a gate and arpeggiator for creating rhythmic patterns. On top of that, you can find a smooth parameter morphing function for crafting evolving sounds.

According to discoDSP, you can import Nord Lead 2 and 2X patches into the Discovery AUv3 Synthesizer. From the start, you can find over 3500 presets in the patch browser, including percussion sets and NL2 patches. The synth organizes the sound memory in banks, each with 128 patches.

There is currently no demo of the iPad version.

First Impression

At first glance, it’s great to see that the Discovery Synth is now available on iPad. But we’ll have to wait and see how this synth will be maintained in the next 1-2 years. discoDSP is known for charging for updates. See the new OB-Xd v3 or Discovery Pro v8 on desktop, which cost $75 as an update for users of v7.

That’s why I’m a little less enthusiastic about the release. You may have to pay again to get version 2 on iPad. Let’s see.

discoDSP Discovery AUv3 is available now for $19,99 on the Apple AppStore and runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iPads.
