Hivetune Relica is a new free retro-style Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows designed for generating 8-bit timbres.

In recent years, many free synthesizer plugins have been released. Many of them have powerful engines that can keep up with commercial plugins.

The new developer, Hivetune, is taking a different approach. The motto here is less is more with its first free synth plugin.

Relica is a new free retro-style Synthesizer plugin. It is retro because the synth focuses on creating 8-bit sounds. The synth offers a compact engine that is quick and easy to use and is aimed at beginners as well as advanced users.

Hivetune’s first synth plugin offers a single oscillator with classic shapes: square, sawtooth, triangle, and sine. Its unique feature is the pulse width modulation for all oscillator shapes. So you can not only shape the square but the other waveforms.

Then, you have a multi-wave vibrato that introduces subtle or heavy pitch variations. Hivetune Relica also has a bit-crusher effect that catapults your sounds instantly into the retro 8-bit spheres.

Further, it also hosts a classic ADSR envelope with visualization hidden under name dynamics.

First Impression

At first glance, a very simple free synth plugin. Regarding features, it’s more of the same, and other synths can certainly make these sounds, too. One advantage of using Relica would be its compactness and the resulting fast workflow to make retro sounds.

Hivetunes Relica is available now for free download. It runs as an AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and VST3 on Windows.
