Ternär Music Flechtwerk is a new free Mutable Instruments Plaits-based macro Synthesizer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
The Mutable Instruments Plaits is arguably one of the most popular digital oscillators in Eurorack format. Both the hardware and software are open source and can now be found in many other synthesizers.
For example, in the recently released Elastic OSC app for iOS, you put the Plaits algorithms in heavy, versatile motion. Ternär Music had included the algorithms in the free Flechtwerk M4L Synthesizer. Now he’s turned the M4 into a free plugin.

Flechtwerk is a new free Synthesizer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
Like the former M4L device, the new Ternär Music Flechtwerk plugin uses the beloved Mutable Instruments Plaits algorithm. More precisely, you can explore all 24 distinct synthesis models in the synth.
The algorithms have a wide sonic range and cover various synthesis concepts, including virtual analog, 2-OP, and DX-7-style FM, formant, additive, wavetable, speech, granular, modal resonator, drum synthesis, wave terrain, and more.
Each algorithm is shapeable with three intuitive macro controls: harmonics, timbre, and morph. Additionally, there is an FM option and a transpose parameter. Besides its manual control, you can also modulate two parameters at the same time.
Furthermore, you can find a simple decay envelope with a color knob, also taken from the open-source code by Émilie Gillet. A volume parameter is also onboard for adjusting the output level of the synth.
There isn’t a video demo of the Ternär Music Flechtwerk plugin version yet, but here’s one of the M4L, which is identical.
First Impression
It’s a shame the developer stopped developing the M4L version. It’s positive, however, to see that he has now converted it into a VST3/CLAP plugin so that more people can benefit from it. An AU version would be perfect.
Ternär Music Flechtwerk is now available as a free download for 64-bit only VST3 and CLAP on macOS (native Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux, and Windows. No AU version, I hope it will be added sometime. Currently, Logic Pro can only use the plugin via a plugin wrapper detour.
The Max For Live version development has been retired, but you can still download the latest version here.
Some anti-virus software may flag the Windows CLAP and VST3 versions of this plugin as malware. The developer says this is a false positive detection and not malware.
