In two weeks, NAMM 2026 opens its doors to visitors in Anaheim, USA. Many music tech news items are expected, hopefully including some in the synth sector.

The MIDI Eight is a new 8-input/8-output MIDI interface in rack-mount format. According to Black Lion Audio, MIDI Eight is designed to unify even the most sprawling synth and controller setups.

MIDI Eight is fully class-compliant for plug-and-play use with macOS, Windows, and iOS devices. You don’t need to install drivers for it. Power it via USB when connected to a computer, or switch to the included DC adapter to run the unit completely standalone.

It provides eight 5-pin MIDI inputs and output (7 on the backside), each offering real-time acitvity indiciators for visual feedback on the front panel. Plus, there is an additional MIDI in/out port on the front panel for quick connections of newly-acquired hardware.

Excellent addition is the built-in five-port powered USB hub that accommondates modern USB MIDI controllers, mobile devices, and essential computer peripherals.

Thus MIDI Eight is perfect for hybrid setups. A dedicated panic button instantly silences stuck notes, useable in both live and studio setups. Also on the front panel, you can switch between three dedicated standalone operation modes for routing.

The pass mode is where each input routes directly to its corresponding output for fast, intuitive connections. Then in thru mode, a single MIDI input distributes data to every output simulatenously. It’s pefect for one controller driving multiple synths or drum machines.

The last one is the merge mode where all inputs are combined and sent to output 1. It’s ideal for multiple controllers feeding a single multitimbral sound generator or DAW. Of course, it also handels classic MIDI duties like program changes, MIDI tempo, etc.

Black Lion Audio MIDI Eight is housed in a sleek black aluminum enclosure with a vibrant LED MIDI monitor. Deeper MIDI functions such as filters, etc., as you would expect from an interface like the CME….

First Impression

At first glance, this is an exciting MIDI interface. I like that it has a built-in powered USB hub. It’s a shame that it doesn’t have more advanced MIDI functions, as that would have made it even more interesting.

Black Lion Audio MIDI Eight will be available for $349/465€ in Februrary 2026.
