NUSofting daHornet bis 2024 is an EDP Wasp Synthesizer emulation, and the new version 3.1.0 adds new features and native Apple Silicon support.
There are tons of plugins on the market from various developers worldwide. With this absurd amount of releases every day, week, and month, many plugins disappear into the voice and, at best, fly under the radar known by insiders.
The plugins from Italian indie developer NUSofting might be a good fit. Often overlooked, they offer exciting plugins with usually more experimental concepts. There are also some lovely free plugins that I have already covered.
One of their more famous ones is the daHornet bis, an emulation of the EDP Wasp Synthesizer. However, the plugin has been somewhat forgotten.
For one thing, there have been few updates in the last few years, and for another, the daily growing market for synth plugins makes it even more challenging to stay in the focus of the music production community.
It also happened to me. I missed that NUSofting released a major 3.1 update for the daHornet bis at the end 2024. Sorry for that; I’m catching up now.
NUSofting daHornet bis 3.1 (2024)
daHornet bis 3.1 (2024) emulates the iconic British EDP Wasp Synthesizer, initially developed by legendary engineer Chris Huggett. The new version ships with many new welcome features.
You’ll see one right away when you first load it. Luigi from NUSofting has given the new daHornet bis 3.1 (2024) an updated GUI that is now fully resizable.
The modeled synthesis engine is still very close to the original but with some additions and improvements. Unlike the hardware, it’s a 16-voice polyphonic synth with two oscillators, each with two waves and a noise generator. According to the developer, the 2024 version offers new anti-aliasing oscillators.
Then, you shape the signals with a multimode filter, which has two modes (vintage and dirty) and lowpass, highpass, and bandpass options.
Modulation can be infused using the two distinct envelopes and the multiwave LFO. New in the NUSofting daHornet bis 3.1 (2024) are also toggle buttons enabling a repeat function on the envelopes.
In addition, you can benefit from a new echo effects processor, a presence EQ, and improved speaker saturation FX. The new GUI also has a new custom preset browser filled with factory presets.
Other welcome features are full MIDI learn support for the parameters, tooltips in the GUI, and native Apple Silicon support.
First Impression
It’s great that the daHornet bis is running on modern systems again. I can’t say how close or 100% authentic the synth is to the original hardware. For me, it has this gritty, aggressive quality that made the original so special. And good that it’s still so inexpensive.
NUSofting daHornet bis 2024 is available now for 16€ or more (name your price). It runs as a 64-bit VST, VST3, and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
Customers who have purchased a previous version within 6 months of this release can request a free 3.1.0 license, a new download will be added to their nusofting.com account.
