NUSofting Filter4Tongue: “free” experimental filter plugin and three “name your price” synths

SYNTH ANATOMY uses affiliation & partner programs (big red buttons) to finance a part of the activity. If you use these, you support the website. Thanks!

NUSofting Filter4Tongue is an experimental filter plugin for macOS and Windows, plus three synths are now available at your name-your-price

Let’s stick with individual developers and experimental plugins. Among them is the Italian developer NUSofting, which released the unique Filter4Tongue plugin for Windows back in September.

Now there’s also a macOS version, and it’s available as a “name your price” option, including free. Alongside this, you also now pay what you want for these three original experimental synths: Sinmad, Peti SA, and Modelonia.

NUSofting Filter4Togue

Filter4Togue is a new “free” experimental filter plugin for macOS and Windows. Experimental because it’s not your average filter plugin, which already has so much more.

At NUSofting Filter4Togue, the core is a filter bank with four bandpass filters arranged in two parallel pairs, with parallel routing. The input signal’s volume can be adjusted with a fader. You can also mix in pink noise, turning the Filter4Togue into a sound generator.

Each pair is fully tweakable with a frequency control (Hz), frequency spread, resonance (Q) with a variable option, and gain. This setup allows you for both symmetrical and divergent filter tunings.

Modulation is also on the menu. The plugin includes an envelope follower with a loop mode and four assignable targets (hetz, spread 1, spread 2, and noise). The pink noise can also be used as a modulation source.

The modulation engine gives you a wide range of options for rhythmic and dynamic filtering effects. There’s also a saturation unit that kicks in when you are pushing the sound into overdrive territory. Plus, you can set the dry/wet mix and output level.

Filter4Togue is a unique plugin with a strong focus on experimental sound design. It might not be everyone’s cup of filter tea. You can use it to emphasize specific formants, create wild animated resonances, or even as a drone and texture generator.

Three Name Your Price Synths

There’s more news from NUSofting besides the release of Filter4Tongue 1.0 for macOS and Windows. Three of his experimental-flavored Synthesizer plugins (Modelonia, Sinmad, and Peti SA), which have been available for some time, are now also available as a “name for your price” option.

Just like with Inear Display in the previous article, there’s a free option for these plugins, but it’s not recommended.

Since this is also an independent developer who needs every bit of income to maintain or further develop the plugins, it would be great to make a donation.

NUSofting Filter4Tongue three

Modelonia is a physical-modeling Synthesizer plugin that uses a hybrid of two distinct model types: a plucked-string model and a blown-bore (trumpet-type) model. A lovely, original synth that I’ve already played around with in the past.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to have native Apple Silicon support. Perhaps due to the increased interest and donations now, the developer may add M1 support to the list. I still have hopes.

Peti SA is a Synthesizer that emulates the Harmonium sound using a custom hybrid FM synthesis. The original hardware is a member of the Reed Organ family and is capable of producing accordion sounds as well. Same here, no Apple Silicon version.

Sinmad is an original Synthesizer plugin that combines virtual-analog and physical-modeling synthesis in a novel way. It uses waveshaping oscillators, FM, one-shot samples, and a unique feature called harmonically integrated attack transient (HIAT).

Another unique feature is its polyphonic delay network, with three delay lines per voice and up to nine comb filters feeding into each other and modulating. This gives you the synth’s physical modeling and organic touch.

Since Sinmad was only released in June 2021, it has native Apple Silicon support.

NUSofting Filter4Tongue & 3 Synths… Impression

Today seems to be the day for “pay what you want.” After Inear Displays, now NUSofting is offering this option as well. Luigi’s plugins are all very special, not your average run-of-the-mill ones.

Anyone who appreciates the extraordinary should check them out. And developers like these should be supported with donations; otherwise, they will disappear.

NUSofting Filter4Tongue is available as donationware (free or more). It runs as a VST, VST3, and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

Sinmad (VST2 and AU with Apple Silicon), Peti SA (VST2 and AU no Apple Silicon), and Modelonia (VST2 and AU no Apple Silicon)  are also now available as donationware (free or more).

Please consider donating to support the developer so he can continue development.
