BlepFX crunchrr is a free, straightforward digital bit crush-style distortion/degrader plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
Throughout the year, I reported countless excellent free plugin deals, either for a limited time or free forever. The plugins from Full Bucket Music were definitely at the top of my list and that of many readers. Björn has given away many beautiful synthesizers and drum machines.
Just before the new year, another free plugin has been released. BlepFX, famous for its destructor plugin, which was launched in October, has introduced crunchrr, a new free distortion effect plugin.
BlepFX crunchrr
Crunchrr is an easy-to-use audio degrader effect plugin that adds digital artifacts to your sounds. The core consists of an engine that modulates a small fractional delay line at an audio rate at high frequency. This gives you a bit of crush/sample divide/erosion kind of effect.
BlepFX crunchrr allows you to choose between various modulator types, including noise, bandpass noise, sine, square, triangle, and saw. Each has a wide range of frequencies (0.1 Hz up to 22 kHz).
Then, you can adjust the effect’s stereo width by offsetting the modulators’ phases for left and right channels. Alternatively, you can set the modulation to mono.
The plugin has a minimal, resizable black/white UI with five simple parameters. According to the developer, it uses extremely optimized algorithms, which means it is very light on CPUs.
First Impression
At first glance, a nice little free effect plugin that can add digital dirt to any clean signal. I like the very simple look that allows you to work very directly and quickly.
BlepFX cruncher is now available for free download. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS, Linux, and Windows.
