Wildergarden Audio MAIM is a free effects plugin that lets you add wild lo-fi timbres, glitches, and distortions to your audio content.
The last few years have shown that December is the month in which you get the most free plugins. Cherry Audio made a good start to the season last weekend with the SEM Synthesizer plugin.
Today there is another free plugin. This time, it comes from the new developer Wildergarden Audio, and it’s an effect plugin that explores the experimental fields.
Wildergarden Audio MAIM
MAIM is an exciting free degradation effects plugin. Spoiler: it’s not another lo-fi plugin like we’ve seen so many of in recent years. It takes a different, unique path.
According to Wildergarden Audio, it features two “real” MP3 encoders. But instead of leaving it with the classic lo-fi effects, the developers “hacked” the process and made the whole thing even wilder. They have exposed the engine and give the user free rein to tweak it
MAIM features have six main sections: bitrate with two types of encoders (blade/lame), frequency reassignment, spectral effects with feedback control, miscellanea, drive, and high- and low-pass filters. Plus, you get control over the makeup gain and dry/wet control.
The plugin allows you to dive deep into wild crunches, degradations, spectral distortions, and melting glitches. To unlock more sonic adventures, you can automate all the knobs without unwanted pops or gaps in the sound from your DAW.
Nice to see that the plugin is open-source and that the developer invites others to add new features if they like. So it may be that the plugin continues to grow
First Impression
A very wild, experimental effects plugin. The results that you can hear in the linked demo sound big extreme sound mangling fun. Certainly, not everyone will enjoy these timbres. I’m a big fan of plugins that offer new, wilder concepts.
Wildergarden Audio MAIM is available now as a free download. It runs as a 64-bit only VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows. The plugin will always be 100% free and open-source.
