RTMS VAPolyWest is a new virtual analog/west-coast AUv3 Synthesizer plugin with a built-in sequencer for iOS and macOS
The Japanese developer Ryo Togawa, or RTMS for short, has already released a large number of iOS/macOS apps. In addition to a range of effects, he also has many synthesizers in his portfolio. Many of his releases are very similar or are simply new versions (VAPoly16, VAPolyMkII…).
His focus so far has been on analog modeling/virtual analog. For his new release, VAPolyWest, he stays with virtual analog but combines it for the first time with Buchla-inspired features. It’s not 100% west-coast but more bi-coast.
RTMS VAPolyWest
VAPolyWest is a new 8-voice virtual analog/west-coast Synthesizer.
The core consists of three distinct oscillators, allowing you to start either subtractive or Buchla-like. First, it includes a classic oscillator with continuously variable waveshapes (triangle, sawtooth, square) with a quantization option.
Next, you have a mod oscillator with a low/high-frequency range, and different mod options (FM, AM, PWM). Plus, a complex sine oscillator with wave folding and PWM.
Then, there is no filter block but two multimode lowpass gates in RTMS VAPolyWest – a combination of a filter and VCA that makes more organic sounds possible. Nice, there are three modes: lowpass filter, VCA, or a combination of both. Also here, you can choose the direction: west or east coast.
Let’s examine the modulation. It hosts an ASR envelope generator, a pulser with release time, and a sine-wave LFO.
On the left side, you can find a sequential voltage generator with five stages/steps, level control, and a trigger for each step. Delay, chorus, flanger, reverb, EQ, and compressor are available to refine your sounds.
Hidden on a second page is a clip-based 16-step sequencer. Here, you can easily program your notes and let the sequencer play your favorite melodies. In RTMS VAPolyWest, you can loop your sequences with up to 16 bars and create up to 8 clips that are either free-running or synced to your host.
First Impression
From the first two demo videos, it sounds like a very nice bi-coast Synthesizer. It is interesting that you can flexibly switch between the two synthesis concepts and thus explore both worlds. I welcome that Ryo Togawa shows something new this time instead of releasing another VA in another version in its portfolio. Great release.
RTMS VAPolyWest is available now for an introductory price of $5,99/6,99€ (60% OFF). It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone/iPad), Apple Vision, and macOS (Apple Silicon only).
