AudioThing Things Fold, a new addition to the Things plugin series, is an easy-to-use dynamic wave folder for macOS, Linux, Windows, and iOS.
One advantage of realizing ideas in software is that you can cram a lot into it. Where there is often a limit in hardware, the possibilities in apps or plugins are almost limitless. However, this can lead to a disadvantage in that the whole thing becomes very unintuitive, and there are too many options for the user.
There are also plugin manufacturers who deliberately implement less to keep it hands-on. A good example is AudioThing’s very focused Things plugin lineup. There are few features, but it is very intuitive and direct to operate. The latest AudioThing Things release is called Fold.
AudioThing Things Fold
Things Fold is a new straightforward wavefolder plugin inspired by the legendary classic diode-based Serge Wave Multipliers.
For this new plugin, AudioThing teamed up with Luca Minellia and this community, Synth Cafè, an Italian synth group. For a change, no new Hainbach plugin.
The plugin includes a wavefolder, an envelope follower, built-in low—and high-pass filters, and adjustable feedback. This combination allows for various creative sound design possibilities, from gentle harmonics to crunchy distorted sounds.
Like the other AudioThing plugins, there is a built-in preset browser, a bypass button, and a randomizer.
A wavefolder is an exciting effect because it quickly creates complex timbres from every simple, classic waveform, or signal.
In modular synthesis, it’s often used to generate a kind of Buchla-style oscillator from a traditional one with sine, square, or sawtooth waves. You can do this beautiful shaping fun here as a plugin or on iOS. Depending on the settings, wavefolding can also be used for mild saturation to subtly color a signal or pushed to extremes for intense, aggressive distortion.
First Impression
At first glance, a nice instant fun wavefolder. The envelope follower, in particular, is a great addition as it takes the whole thing in a more dynamic section. Great for organic wavefolding effects. A big like goes to AudioThing for the Linux and iOS versions.
AudioThing Things Fold is available now for an introductory price of 9€ instead of 19€. It runs as a 64-bit VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
The iOS version with AUv3 support is available now for an intro price of $2,99 instead of $6,99 on the Apple AppStore.
