Spherical Sound Society Ono-Sendai is a new portable DIY Synthesizer powered by the Mutable Instruments Braids oscillators.

Etsy is a paradise for DIY projects and small business products. It is also the platform if you are looking for extraordinary synthesizers and other electronic instrument creations in mini-series.

A new one for 2024 comes from Spherical Sound Society, the makers of the Opera Rotas drum machine.

Ono-Sendai is a new portable digital Synthesizer available as a DIY project. No worries, there is also an assembled version for musicians with two left hands.

The digital core hosts all 54 oscillator modes from the open-source Mutable Instruments Braids macro oscillator, playable chromatically with a MIDI keyboard.

They include emulations of analog VCOs and various digital synthesis types: 2-OP FM, ring mod, vocal synthesis, physical modeling, wavetables, and noise.

According to the developer, they have migrated the code from the original STM32 microcontroller to a more powerful RP2040 chip by Raspberry Pi. This offers more power for new features.

Part of the new features are a new generative sequencer with parameter locks, two multi-wave LFOs, and two envelopes. This turns the popular Braids oscillators into a groovebox. Then it also includes an OLED screen and other extras.

Spherical Sound Society promises free updates for it in the future. The Ono-Sendai is operated with eight knobs and small buttons for navigating through the menu.

On the connection side, it has an audio output, a mini jack MIDI input, and a USB-C port for powering. Therefore, you can also power it via a power bank. There is no sync in or out.

First Impression

It looks like a fun digital Synthesizer for little money. I’m curious to see where the developer takes the synth.

Spherical Sound Society Ono-Sendai is available now for pre-order with a 15% discount in three versions: DIY with PCB + microcontroller for 94,95€, complete DIY kit for 114,95€, or fully assembled for 139,95€. Shipping starts in early/mid-February 2024.
