Hannes d’Hoine Strike brings the open-source Mutable Instruments Rings module in a free Max for Live device (instrument/FX).
After Mutable Instruments shut down, its products and code lived on as simple module clones or in other forms. This is possible because they are open-source.
A new iteration comes from musician Hannes d’Hoine, who brings Mutable Instruments Rings to Ableton Live setups.
Hannes d’Hoine Strike
Strike is a free Max For Live device that features the Mutable Instruments Rings resonator engine. Like in the original, Hannes d’Hoine added to Strike the option to use it as a Synthesizer controllable with MIDI or as an effect processor.
Using it as a Synthesizer, you can play it MIDI and the frequency tracks the MIDI input. In this case, it’s a lovely M4L physical modeling Synthesizer.
In the FX workflow, select your sound source, place Strike next to it, and it becomes a unique resonator effects processor.
Strike offers the same three resonator modes (modal synthesis, sympathetic, string) and parameters as the module: frequency, structure, brightness, damping, and position.
Furthermore, it has a dedicated section where you can set the dry and wet amount when using it as an effects processor. There are no extra fancy features. The developer kept the port very simple.
First Impression
A great port that makes it easy to bring the magic of Mutable Instruments Rings into Ableton Live.
Hannes d’Hoine Strike is available now as a free download. It runs as a Max for Live device in Ableton Live Suite and Live Standard + M4L license.
