Fors Lood is a new free M4L subtractive Synthesizer and the “Moogy” ladder version of the free Lode synth device.
Let’s start the new “news” year with something small. Last October (2023), ex-Elektron developer Ess Mattisson, aka Fors, released the free M4L synth Lode. It is not a groundbreaking device, but a nice-sounding free mono synth that offers Roland-style sounds.
Fors has another free M4L device for the new year. It is the sister app of Lode. Same structure, open source, just a different filter.
Fors Lood
Like Lode, Lood is a free M4L monophonic bass Synthesizer inspired by the most beloved vintage synths. The core features two analog-inspired morphing oscillators with noise, saw, and pulse + PWM waves. There is no sub-oscillator but two oscillators are individually tuneable.
The filters are different. Where Lode has a Roland 303-inspired 24dB filter, Lood has a ladder filter. “Moogy” as Fors describes it. Then, you get a filter sweep envelope, an exponential decay envelope, and a legato with pitch slide
Lood is made with Ableton Live and Push in mind, fitting perfectly on a Push 2 + 3 screen with eight tweakable parameters. It is also fully compatible with the Push 3 standalone. This allows you to use Lood also in standalone without your computer.
First Impression
I would be happy if the ladder filter option was integrated into the Lorde version, so you only need one device in your system. Maybe with a switch with which you can change the filter mode. Either way, it’s an excellent release you should not miss.
Fors Lood is open-source and available now as a free download and requires Ableton Live Suite 10.1+ (or standard with the Max for Live add-on).
