NoiseSpace is a new sound generator app that is all about noises. It packs a noise laboratory with synthesis and modulation power into your Apple Silicon Mac and iOS device.

Igor Vasiliev has created a custom engine for NoiseSpace that allows you to craft complex noisescapes from scratch. It comprises five sound generators, each with two outputs (main and background layer), that utilize simplex noise in combination with granular synthesis.

For each generator, you get pan and level controls, mute, and solo buttons, giving you mixing flexibility. A dedicated sub-menu unlocks the power of each generator and lets you dive deep into its capabilities. The first row offers various shaping parameters, including the granular synthesis part of the engine.

Then, you can further shape the tone of the main and background generator with a colorful multimode filter that offers classic and more experimental filters, such as lowcrash or ringpass.

Alternatively, you can use an external input as a generator signal source. In this case, the generator will use an external signal instead of simplex noise.

Deep Modulation & Routing

Modulation is also per channel/generator. Each is equipped with three multi-wave LFOs with built-in randomization that are fully adjustable and mapable to most engine parameters in a dedicated sub-menu.

Map the LFOs to various parameters, set them a little random, and your generator takes on a life of its own. If that’s not enough, you can also work with an internal sequencer and binary counter that turns the main and background outputs on and off to create unique, rhythmic, evolving textures.

Next to the five generators and their independent mix channels, the dedicated main and background sections determine the relationship between them in the final mix. Plus, you can set the space type, density, and modulation applied to the background layer.

That sounds like an intense engine that Igor Vasiliev designed for the NoiseSpace app. If the depth is a bit daunting, don’t worry. NoiseSpace has randomizers in many areas that you can use to generate new sounds quickly.

Or the Create button makes it even easier, allowing you to randomize everything with a simple button press. Don’t forget the app is standalone as well as an AUv3 plugin, meaning you can create huge noisescapes by using multiple instances.

First Impression

I have been a big fan of Igor Vasiliev’s developments for many years. I use at least one app of his apps in every live performance I give. NoiseSpace is an app that will definitely find a place in my live setup. It’s another lovely, powerful app for all kinds of sound- and noisescapes.

Igor Vasiliev NoiseSpace is available now for $15,99 on the Apple App Store. It runs as a standalone universal app and AUv3 plugin on iOS and macOS (native Apple Silicon).
