AAS Multiphonics CV-2,  major upgrade with 15 new modules, and version 2 now turns the modular synth into a modular FX processor.

Modular synthesis has also made its way into the software world. That for a long time. Native Instruments Reaktor, Cycling74 Max, etc. Over the past few years, more and more Eurorack-inspired modular synths have been coming out as plugins.

Also, AAS from Canada started early with the soft modular world with its Tassmann plugin. It was surprising for many when AAS released Multiphonics CV-1, a modular synth that wasn’t the successor to Tassman but an all-new one. Even if the market is highly competitive (VCV Rack, Voltage Modular…) Multiphonics has something very lovely and unique about it. Reminds me of the Buchla patching charm.

AAS Multiphonics CV-2

With Multiphonics CV-2, AAS sends its colorful modular synth into the second round. Not a free update but one with lots new functionalities and improvements.

AAS Multiphonics CV-2

According to AAS, the new version takes the capabilities of Multiphonics from a Synthesizer to a full modular ecosystem. New in the Multiphonics CV-2 is:

  • modular FX plugin: it can now be used as an effect processor in your DAW and process audio inputs. That is an excellent addition, so you get two plugins in one
  • new modules: 15 new modules, including filters, saturator, crusher, logic gate, splitter, crossfader, mide-side, panner, and more. There are many new modules but still few from the field where AAS is a specialist: physical modeling. I hope there are some exciting oscillators in the future.
  • more patches: Multiphonics CV-2 ships with a new factory library comprising 150 new synth and effect patches created by renowned sound designers.
  • improved workflow: patching and adjusting parameters is now faster and easier with stereo patching, one-to-many module patching, many-to-many module patching, and multimodule actions. This a very important point in a software modular synth and to good the improvements.
  • scalable UI: both the Multiphonics windows and the patching canavas can now be scaled for an optimized playing or patching experience. A must-feature in 2023

Improvements

There are also major improvements that ship with Multiphonics CV-2. According to AAS, 6 modules have been enhanced with new stereo capabilities and features for audio input processing.

Further, it comes with a new streamlined browser that allows for efficient navigation through the factory library, user patches, expansion sound packs, and the module library when patching.

First Impression

A neat update for the Multiphonics CV-2. Too bad it’s not a free update. However, you get many new modules and the possibility to use it as a  modular FX. As already written, I hope that AAS will also bring more physical modeling ideas into the M-CV-2 to have even more of a unique modular synth that stands out from the competition

AAS Multiphonics CV-2 is available now for an introductory price of $99 instead of $149. There is also a special pack bundle with additional sounds for $129 instead of $189. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (Intel + native Apple Silicon) and Windows. Upgrades are available for $49.
