Sequential Prophet 12 is a hybrid polyphonic Synthesizer, initially released in 2013, the desktop module version is now officially discontinued. What’s next?

In the past few months, there has been enough movement at Sequential. The release of the Pro-3 at NAMM 2020 or the return of the legendary Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 end of 2020. Not just new releases, some are gone forever: Tempest, Pro-2 … Now another one.

Sequential today announced the official discontinuation of the Prophet 12 desktop module.

Sequential Statement

After years of faithful service, the Sequential Prophet 12 Desktop Module is retiring and will be laying down synthetic grooves on a tropical island where the sun never sets and the music never ends.

In December 2013 Dave Smith presented the P12 as a desktop until under the company Dave Smith Instruments. The voice card of the hybrid Synthesizer Prophet 12 built into a super-compact housing with just a few knobs. A perfect companion for mobile setup or small studios. Even after 7 years + the engine is still very exciting. In the past it was rather daring, today it is trendy because hybrid synthesizers are in great demand again.

It features five DSP-based oscillators (4 oscillators + sub) with cross-mod (FM/AM), analog Curtis (2- or 4-pole) resonant lowpass filter per voice, 2-pole resonant analog high-pass filter per voice, analog VCAs, four envelopes, four syncable LFOs, stereo analog distortion per layer, five digital effects & more.

The feature set is strongly reminiscent of the Novation Peak / Summit, which also combines high-resolution DSP oscillators with analog filters and distortion. This combination is particularly exciting because you can heat up the somewhat colder digital oscillators with the analog filter and distortion. You give them a more saturated, punchy, and characterful sound.

What’s Next?

The question is what’s next. The Pro-3 already continues the hybrid line from Sequential. It is not known whether we will see a new hybrid Prophet in 2021, it would be nice. Dave Smith said at the end of the year (2020) that they were working on two new devices. A new hybrid Prophet would be possible and also logical for me. Hybrid is a trend and would fit perfectly into the current synthesizer year.

Sequential Prophet 12 desktop module costs 1599€.
