Audio Damage Evil Otto is a new free OTT multiband compressor plugin for macOS, Linux, Windows, and the iOS version is not free.
The activity level of the very American development company Audio Damage has been surprisingly high in recent weeks. First, the new granular reverb Descent, then the major update for the Continua synth, and now there’s another plugin.
Audio Damage has released Evil Otto, a new free cross-platform OTT multiband compressor plugin.
Audio Damage Evil Otto
Evil Otto is a new free OTT-style multiband compressor plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Audio Damage also released an iOS version, but it’s available for purchase separately.
A look at the plugin portfolio shows that the previously free multiband compressor, Rough Rider 2, is no longer available. It’s possible that Evil Otto has replaced it.
Evil Otto splits your audio into three frequency bands (low, mid, and high) and applies simultaneous upward and downward compression to each band independently. That is the classic way how OTT-style compression works, seen in the Xfer Records OTT plugin.
You can adjust the processor with various controls. Depth controls the overall compression intensity, while the time sets the attack and release speed of the compressor. Plus, you have separate down amount and up amount controls for the strength of peak reduction and detail boosting.
Then, each band has its own threshold and output level control on white sliders, so you can fine-tune it. More precisely, it lets you dial in how the compression interacts with different parts of the frequency spectrum. This makes it very flexible.
Neat, Audio Damage also added an external sidechain input with a listen mode. There is also a bypass function with a smooth crossfade option for clean A/B comparison.
Like the previous AD plugins, it also comes with the new preset browser with import/export functionality. Via a dedicated setting panel, you can also customize the plugin, including an alternative Outrun color scheme.
First Impression
A great free plugin release with a modern UI design that makes it easy to understand and to use. It will surely find a place in any DAW.
Audio Damage Evil Otto is available now as a free download. You need to register on their mailing list to get the plugin. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, CLAP, LV2, and AAX on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
The iOS version is available for $2,99 on the Apple App Store and runs as an AUv3 plugin.
