Krotos has officially discontinued its Synthesizer plugin lineup today with Concept 2 and Simple Concept for macOS and Windows.

Every year, hundreds of new audio plugins are released and promoted to us from all sides. However, there’s also a sad side that’s best left unaddressed. Dozens of plugins also die every year.

Either because the company goes out of business or because the developer has other plans and discontinues support. This has now happened with two relatively young Synthesizer plugins. Krotos, known for its special sound design plugins, has officially discontinued its Synthesizer lineup today, including Concept 2 and Simple Concept.

In a newsletter, Krotos announced that Concept 2 from 2021, as well as Simple Concept (2020), are being discontinued.

As a reminder: Concept 2 is a multi-engine Synthesizer featuring virtual analog, FM, and sample-based granular synthesis. It is supported by a powerful modulation engine.

Simple Concept is the complete opposite. It only uses seven macro parameters and a dice with which you can randomize sounds. But now it’s moving from concept to conceptless.

Starting today, November 11th, Krotos is removing the Concept 2, Simple Concept, and Ultimate Bundle from sale.

“We’ve been taking a closer look at how our products are used, and one thing has become clear: you want faster workflows, simpler tools, and more focus on the products you love most.

To support this, we’re streamlining our product lineup so we can spend more time focusing on our most-used tools, including Krotos Studio, Dehumaniser 2, Weaponiser and Reformer Pro.

If you already own any of these presets, your licenses will continue to work as they do totday. You’ll still receice support and no further action is required, says the developers.

It seems certain to me that neither of them were successful. This was evident in recent years. Firstly, both plugins were available for 1€ on Humble Bundle, and secondly, there were no further updates. Native Apple Silicon support was never provided for the plugins, which frustated many users.

It’s a shame that the plugins are now disappearing from the market and will probably never receive updates to ensure they continue to run on new Mac systems.

In that case, I would be happy if Krotos decided to make the plugins free and open-source, so the developer community could make up for what they haven’t done in the last four years.
