Ahead of Buchla & Friends 2025, Modbap Modular has introduced Trinity 2.0, a major update for its drum synth module with new synth models and more.

At Knobcon 2022, Modbap Modular released Trinty, a very flexible three-channel digital drum Synthesizer module for Eurorack. Corry Banks will not be at the NAMM show this year but will be at the parallel event Buchla & Friends 2025, which takes place on Saturday/Sunday

Here, he will showcase the new Trinty 2.0 firmware update, making the module more powerful. Great, it’s a free update for existing users.

Trinity 2.0 features two brand-new engines: ORB, a modal synthesis engine that offers resonant, tonal percussion, and CLANG, which generates bright, captivating metallic sounds. These new engines expand the sound spectrum, making many new drum and percussive sounds possible.

The new firmware 2.0 also introduces advanced preset management with up to 12 customizable presets (four per channel). It allows users to save and recall entire drum kits at any time. This enables performers to streamline their setups and focus on creativity.

It also introduces a new MIDI 12-pad finger drumming mode, allowing musicians to use a MIDI pad controller connected via USB-C and spread the 12 presets across the pads. Plus, preset selection is now available via CV.

Trinity 2.0 is also a new module with USB-C connectivity instead of the previous micro-USB interface. It ensures better compatibility with a broader range of devices, including DAWs and external hardware.

With USB-C MIDI support, Trinity 2.0 facilitates smooth communication for MIDI-based control while also supporting CV control per channel.

While USB-C is exclusive to the Trinity 2.0 hardware, the updated firmware brings new capabilities to both the original and new models, ensuring that all users can take advantage of the latest features.

At first glance, it is a lovely further development for the Trinity module. I am pleased that firmware 2.0 is also made available to existing users.

The new Modbap Modular Trinity 2.0 module will be available in February 2025, and the firmware will be available for free download for existing users.

Update

Article From September 9, 2022

Knobcon, one of the largest US Synthesizer conventions, takes place in Chicago at the weekend. In addition to many concerts and workshops, some new products are also expected. We already saw one this morning with the great ARGON8 update.

Corry Banks from Modbap Modular shows a new Eurorack drum synth module at his booth at Knobcon 2022.

Trinity is a new 3-channel/voice digital drum synth array packed into a 20HP Eurorack module with some neat creative extras. Instead of the classic kick, snare, and hat characteristics, Modbap Modular offers a mighty multi-engine that covers a wider range of sounds. It is packed with an array of different drum synth algorithms using various types of synthesis including subtractive, additive, and FM & noise. This breaks the classic idea and allows many other sounds besides kicks etc. Well thought out by the developers.

The module’s array of digital drum synth algorithms can be tweaked using the 7 knobs and 4 mini-pots. Each controls a specific parameter and characteristic (pitch, sweep, time, shape, grit, decay, EQ, clipper, hold, volume, and character) for each drum type. Of course, each drum channel has its own trigger and v/oct in addition to extensive CV input options per channel (24 CVs in total).

Flexible Routing

Then the routing implementation also has an interesting twist. Trinity comes with a “performable and switchable output matrix” that allows you to customize the routing of each drum channel. So you can decide exactly whether it goes from the drum channel outputs into the mix output or in individual outputs or in both. This makes for easy performability, mutable output, parallel processing, or side chaining possible.

Further, there is a MIDI over USB connection on the module that allows you to control parameters or sounds over a single USB cable. Perfect for connecting it easily to an external groove machine, sequencer or computer.

At first glance an exciting drum synth voice module with some clever ideas. The panel design is very clear and beautifully designed. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Modbap Modular Trinity is available for pre-order for $549 USD.
