Newfangled Audio Obliterate is a free FX plugin that combines filtering and distortion in a very nasty and dirty way.
Filters can be handy tools for enhancing signals. Depending on the type and plugin, they are also interesting sonic manglers. The same applies to distortions: enhancer on one side and signal destroyer on the other. But what happens when you combine the two?
Newfangled Audio’s new free plugin Obliterate for Black Friday answers the question of what happens if you combine these effects in something new.
Newfangled Audio Obliterate
Obliterate is a new free effects plugin described as a distortion filter that was raised from a burger. Newfangled Audio says:
Obliterate started life as a filter, but there was a bug in the code. We could have fixed that bug, but we let it fester. Over time that bug grew and mutated. It gained new powers and its anger warped them to its evil will.
Seven years after that initial bug, Obliterate can’t be described as a filter at all. Obliterate is more like a new form of resonant distortion. Use cautiously. Use sparingly. And always clean up afterward.
The plugin consists of a tweakable filter and a distortion section. The filtering part consists of two resonant multi-mode filters with morphable lowpass, highpass, bandpass, allpass, and notch. You can morph them using the morph XY circle pad in the lower part of the GUI.
Cutoff and resonance for both filters can be dragged and set in the plugin visualizer.
Then, the “absurd, over-the-top, digital” distortion is located between the two morph pads. You can choose between two “destruction” algorithms: “too much” and “too most”.
Evil is the plugin. Newfangled Audio Obliterate produces evil, roaring, and dirty results. If previous free distortions were too tame, you will have friends here.
First Impression
An excellent new, creative plugin from Newfangled Audio. There are already countless distortion and filter plugins. The mix of the two here is exciting and very experimental. I love it—big thanks for this gift.
Newfangled Audio Obliterate is now available for free download from the official website. It runs as a VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
