Eurorack will once again take center stage at this year’s Superbooth 24. The developers from Teia Synthesizers, a young Portuguese company, will be among the attendees. This marks their second project, primarily working with ADDAC, another Portuguese company.

For Superbooth 24, Teia Synthesizers has two new modules: OpticShifter and OpticTone MKII.

The first module for Superbooth 2024 is OpticShifter, a new optical phaser with a wide range of features. The core consists of 20 stages that can be freely selected on the front panel with a slider, ranging from a minimum of 4 to 20 stages.

Next, you can select the VC feedback stages to the same extent as the phaser stages, from 4 to 20. The ability to adjust both so flexibly allows for many different effect timbres. Additionally, you can switch the polarity and magnitude of the feedback.

Then, it hosts a built-in voltage-controlled triangle LFO with a dedicated output that creates the movements for the phaser. Other features are a phase adjustment knob and a pre-phaser tilt EQ called tone.

There is also an input level knob with a clipping indication and a dry/wet mix control. On the connection side, it has a ping input for percussive sounds and many output sockets: wet, shred (heavy “comparator” distortion), and feedback path for pseudo stereo FX. Plus, it has various CV inputs with attenuverters.

Also new for Superbooth 24 is the OpticTone MKII, a new version of its multimode vactrol VCF and VCA. According to Teia Synthesizers, it offers new features and circuit improvements, expanding the previous design.

Like the MK1, the new OpticTone MKII consists of a multimode vactrol active filter and a vactrol-based VCA that are mixable using a dedicated knob. The filter offers 12dB lowpass, 6dB bandpass, and 12dB highpass with voltage-controllable frequency and resonance. An overdrive circuit adds extra juice.

New in the MKII is a signal path switch to select whether VCA and VCF work in parallel or in series. A new switch also adjusts the filter’s range (high, medium, low). A highlight of the new version is the improved vactrol response, allowing you to archive the lovely LPG plucking-type sounds.

On the front panel, you can also find an inverting response switch for the filter cutoff frequency and a feedback knob for extra juice for the resonance.

Further, the inputs and outputs remain the same on the MK2: a mono input and output, a ping input for percussive sounds, and CV control over freq/amp and resonance with attenuverters.

First Impression

At first glance there are two exciting new modules. I particularly like from the feature set the Teia Synthesizers OpticShifter as there are few phasers in the Eurorack market. I am looking forward to hearing the first demos.

Teia Synthesizers OpticShifter and OpticTone availability and price TBA. They will be at Superbooth 24, and you can visit them at booth W206.
