Erica Synths EDU DIY BBD is a new DIY analog delay module for Eurorack with a neat clock twist in collaboration with Moritz Klein.

Eurorack is not a cheap undertaking. That’s why many people go the DIY route and solder their modules to explore the modular world at a lower cost. Of course, soldering skills are required. If you are still in the early stages, you can learn it, for example, with the help of Erica Synths.

They offer their EDU DIY series of Eurorack modules as a kit in which you learn how a circuit works and how to solder it together step by step from scratch. Their latest addition is a BBD delay with a unique clocking twist.

The new EDU DIY BBD is an analog delay module based around a BBD integrated circuit. It features classic delay controls: gain in, time, feedback, and dry/wet. Yes, it’s the classic stuff you expect from every delay effect. But Moritz Klein also added some neat additions.

First, you can switch between two different delay ranges: short and long. This makes the module much more flexible, as you can achieve many more results. Moritz added a second neat addition to its BBD-based circuit.

In addition to the time CV input, there is a mysterious “Inhibit CV” socket with a unique clock twist. If you plug a gate signal into the Inhibit CV, it disconnects the clock signal from the BBD chip at the high gate, stopping the effects in their tracks.

At this patch point, the clock resumes as soon as the gate goes low, and the BBD circuit returns to normal operation. Erica Synths promises that this feature lets the player add some rhythm to the effect or perform other interesting shenanigans.

The module can achieve various results, ranging from classic delay-based effects, slapback echoes, trailing reverberations, and flanger-like sounds to broken spheres.

Like the previous EDU releases, the Erica Synths EDU DIY BBD is 100% DIY and is sold as a kit. It ships with a lovely, illustrated assembly manual that provides deep insights into the functioning of every part of the circuit you’ll build.

First Impression

This is another excellent new Erica Synths EDU DIY module. What I like about the BBD is the built-in extras, such as the Inhibit CV. If you want to get into the DIY world, this series is perfect. You get both the theoretical and the practical in one package.

Erica Synths EDU DIY BBD is available now for 70€ + VAT + shipping as a full DIY kit.

  1. The kits of Moritz Klein are very well explained. I’ve been making some of them, and been able to adapt them to my needs, because they were well explained 🙂
