Behringer releases Surges, a new $49 analog multimode filter based on the open-source Mutable Instruments Ripples module.

Update: it’s now ready for pre-order for 45€ from Thomann

After Plaits (Brains) and Things Ears (Radar), Behringer announced two more clones of open-source Mutable Instruments modules in April 2023. The Marbles as Chaos, and the Ripples as Surgeons.

Chaos, the $99 version of the MI Marbles module has been around at the dealers since the beginning of the year. Now the filter is also ready. Behringer has today released Surges.

Surges is a new 8HP analog clone of the popular Mutable Instruments Ripples v2 multimode filter for Eurorack.

Like the original module, it’s a multimode filter with dedicated lowpass, highpass, and bandpass outputs. Both lowpass and bandpass offer switchable 2-pole and 4-pole slopes, giving you much flexibility. The interface offers classic cutoff and resonance controls for the filter.

On the connection side, you have two audio inputs with an attenuator and CV inputs for the cutoff frequency (attenuverter) and resonance. The V/oct input on the Behringer Surges also allows you to play the filter in self-oscillation as an oscillator.

First Impression

Even if the module isn’t a real gem, the $49 price tag makes up for it. In comparison, Ripple’s clones are offered between 109€ (Tunefish Modular in Germany) to 199€ (After Later Audio).

That’s a massive price difference. I’m curious if we’ll see soon a $99 Behringer version of the stereo version (MI Blades)

Behringer Surges is available soon for $49/45€
