Behringer POLYOsc is an upcoming clone of the iconic OSC OSCar hybrid Synthesizer from legendary synth developer Chris Huggett.

Chris Huggett was the most famous British Synthesizer developer and is one of the most legendary, along with Dave Smith, Tom Oberheim and Bob Moog. He became famous through the OSCar, a hybrid Synthesizer with digital oscillators and analog filters paid with a very striking design.

In addition, there is a very unusual design. Another hybrid synth by Chris Huggett was the WASP. Behringer already recreated this classic in an affordable Eurorack version some time ago. Now, the next stop in the B companies’ endless vintage revival tour is the OSCar.

Once upon a time, the OSCar synthesizer was born—a groundbreaking instrument crafted by the Oxford Synthesiser Company between 1983 and 1985. Ahead of its time in many ways, the OSCar was one of the few mono-synths of its era to feature MIDI, making it a sought-after tool for musicians. With only around 2,000 units produced, it became a cult classic known for its distinctive sound and innovative design.

The POLYOsc is a Synthesizer in development based on the OSC OSCar. According to Behringer, it will build on the OSCar’s legacy but with additional features while staying true to the original’s spirit.

The first prototype is surprising, especially with the different housing than the previous Synthesizer replicas. Very compact, with mini keys, a display, and a row of knobs. There are also pitch- and mod wheels with touch sliders. The labels are reminiscent of the original.

As you can tell from the name POLYOsc, it will probably be a polyphonic Synthesizer. But it could also be paraphonic, like with the Poly D. The name is polyphonic, but the synth is paraphonic.

In order to match the sound of the original, the oscillators must be digital and have the same waveforms and possibilities. There must also be the iconic special analog filter with the ability to create formant sounds.

However, it is currently not certain whether the Behringer POLYOsc synth will be developed and come onto the market. They say:
That’s where you come in. We’re looking to the community for feedback to help us determine if the POLYOsc should become a reality. Your thoughts and input are essential in guiding this decision, and we invite you to share your opinions with us. Let’s continue the OSCar’s legacy together.

Well, in recent years, we have often heard about these treasures from Behringer, and the products have been built. I suspect it will be the same here. Many people will be interested in a polyphonic OSCar replica. I’m very curious to follow the next steps. Stay tuned.

Behringer POLYsc availability and price is TBA.
