With its three effects types and bird voices, the new blööps birb Max for Live (M4L) takes you on a sound journey through nature.

Let’s stay in the fascinating world of Max for Live. If you sit in the studio and watch your screen for hours, a walk in the fresh air or nature is a pleasant change. It helps you switch off from daily stress, get back into Zen and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be inspired by the environment.

Not for the M4L developer company Blööps. For them, opening the window was enough to get inspired.

bïrb is a new M4L multi-effects processor that was created from a chirp heard outside of the window. The new Max for Live device consists of three effects, “flock, sing, and nature,” which are very lovely illustrated in the unit.

From left to right, we have “flock” a stereo delay effect with separate channel controls, spread, and feedback. Then, “sing” consists of a resonating engine that emulates 10 bird types. As an extra, each mode has its own illustration – a pleasing detail.

The sing section offers various parameters: pitch over 24 semitones, tone, break, and unipolar feedback control. From here, it enters an enveloping,  spacious, ambient-style stereo reverb called “nature”. You can adjust it with the place and size controls.

Further, you switch on a wind parameter to make the reverb windy. It uses a built-in modulator to add motion. A bit hidden in the panel is also a randomizer for instant new results.

First Impression

This is a beautiful new M4L Multi-FX processor from blööps. I enjoy the selection of effects. They harmonize beautifully and create interesting nature-like effects. User interfaces in Max for Live are always very limited.

The developers nailed it here. It has a beautiful layout with small goodies that inspire the user. They made a lot out of a little UI.

blööps birb is available now for $14 or more. It requires Ableton Live 10, 11, or 12 Suite or Standard with a Max for Live license.
