Yraki LayerLab is a new Max For Live generator device that layers samples to create endless new sounds using stochastic layering techniques.

Max for Live is a fascinating platform directly embedded in Ableton Live for several years. It’s like a modular audio playground where you can build your own synths, effects, etc. Devices like Dillon Bastan’s demonstrate that they can go very deep. Here is another from another developer.

Yraki has released LayerLab, a new unique, powerful M4L sampling layering device.

LayerLab is a new Max For Live instrument device that generates one-shot sounds through a unique process.

It offers four sample slots that can be layered using stochastic algorithms. Drop a folder with samples into the device, trigger a random MIDI note, and Yraki LayerLab will create a new layered sound from your sample pool. Each connection is graphically represented in the user interface.

In case you need adjustments, the process is also customizable. Each layer lets you tweak the sample selection, sample start, latency, speed, pan, and balance. You also have individual volume controls.

A fun feature is the random function. In the bottom section of the LayerLab M4L device, there is a matrix that lets you set the parameters that should be randomized. This includes all the parameters mentioned before but also others like applying a filter or reverse, stretch, or phase the file.

This process allows you to create new one-shot sounds with a note trigger or a button press.

First Impression

LayerLab looks like a fun, creative tool. It reminds me a lot of the brilliant Dillon Bastan M4L devices, only a bit simpler and easier to use since it has a more extensive interface and fewer features.

Yraki LayerLab is available now for £15 or more. You need Ableton Live Suite or Standard with a Max For Live license to operate it.
