Samplr 1.5, a free update for the popular iPad sampler app adds MIDI support, allowing you to use MIDI controllers and keyboards.
The iOS platform has been around for over 10 years. In the beginning, the options for music production were still limited. Through the introduction of ever more powerful iPads/iPhones, ever-growing apps, and new interface technologies (AudioBus, IAA, AUv3 plugins), over the years, the iOS platform became more and more performant.
Marcos Alonso’s ground-breaking Samplr app was there early on. It was groundbreaking for the mobile music production scene because it was the first sampler app to fully exploit the iPad’s potential. Strange but true, Samplr didn’t have full MIDI support. This has now been remedied in update 1.5
Samplr 1.5
It’s impressive that the Samplr app has been on the market for over 10 years. It was launched in November 2012. There haven’t been many updates since then. Always one or two a year. The last one was in April 2023, which fixed a bug.
The app inspires musicians just like it used to. That’s because it has a lovely interface that invites you to explore sounds with your fingers.
Good news for all Samplr users. With the update 1.5, you can finally use MIDI. This means you can now attach your favorite MIDI controller and keyboard to the iPad and use them with Samplr.
Maybe others feel the same way, but I never missed MIDI because the app was designed for sound exploration with the touch screen. Playing individual slices, cutting, and looping samples… everything worked perfectly with touch.
But I’m happy that the app has now received this update, showing that the development is not over.

First Impression
Marcos is still working on the app. This is the best news for me. I hope that we also get AUv3 support in the future. That would be a great move forward for the app.
Samplr 1.5 is a free update for existing users. The app is available now for $19,99 from the Apple AppStore.

The first iOS app that actually made it into a released song for me (well, it tied with TweakyBeats, the proto-SeekBeats). So happy to see it still gets love from Marcos.
