1010music nanobox tangerine is a new creative ultra-compact sampler with up to 24 voices of multi-sample support, looping, and more.

The Bitbox was the starting point for 1010music. A module that had various facets in the first version using alternative firmware. However, the US-based company focusing on digital products has abandoned this internal modular concept. Today, they prefer to package their codes into hands-on standalone products.

They went this route for the first time with the blackbox granular sampler and the bluebox recorder. In 2022, they continued this with significantly smaller devices, the nanoboxes: small digital instruments, each with different engines. The newest Nanobox member is tangerine and is a compact sampler.

The new tangerine is a new creative sampler in a well-known nanobox shape. Very compact, two knobs, four buttons, a touch-screen, and perfect to put in your pocket.

It looks small and fun, but don’t let the size fool you. Nanobox tangerine features a mature 48kHz sample engine in its core. It can handle 24 stereo polyphonic voices with 16 layers of velocity streaming up to 576 simultaneous samples directly from a microSD card.

Internally, you have 64MB of memory for streaming samples. Alternatively, if this is not enough, you can playback up to 8 larger stereo samples (max 4GB) directly from the microSD card. Each preset consists of eight stereo sample pads that can be played via MIDI, over the touch screen, or sequenced.

Sampling in the tangerine is also possible. To sample into it, simply use the external input and press record. 1010music has created an interesting multi-sample wizard for automatic sampling and mapping. It also comes with an automatic sample slicer for simplifying editing. Thus, tangerine also supports multi-samples, allowing you to create complete instruments.

Sample Processing

1010music has also built a number of creative features into the nanobox tangerine engine with which you can tweak samples. It has classic sampler controls like start position, length, pitch, gain, filter, loop mode, launch quantization, ADSR envelope, clip sync, and more.

There are also more unusual, creative functions such as a full granular engine with grain size, spread, and count. It also comes with exclusive grouping, slice placement and sequencing, and more. Further, you can also resample the master output of the tangerine without extra patching.

It comes with 4GB of hits, loops, and multi-sample instruments. It includes a 1.7GB piano from a top-notch library, which sounds amazing through the inbuilt reverb and delay.

Connectivity

The back is identical to the other Nanoboxes: power and data over USB-C, 3.5mm audio input, and output, MIDI in/out on 3.5mm TRS Type A/B auto-sensing, a clock input, and a microSD card slot.

First Impression

This is the logical next nanobox. After we had two synths (granular/wavetable), a groveboox, a sampler were still missing. I like the feature set, and I’m just unsure whether the sampling will be much fun with so little control. I should check this out. And as always at $399, this Nanobox is a bit high priced. Nonetheless, a lovely new powerful portable sampler.

1010music nanobox tangerine is available soon for $399

  1. i I have to admit that I completely underestimated this little box, I was able to get it for a bargain price and I’m really impressed with the sound quality. The converters are really top-notch, the effects sound very good – eight-way multi-timbral – I’m really impressed.
