Absynth 5, FM8, Massive… from Native Instruments are, for many, the absolute Synthesizer plugin classics. Many music producers still use these plugins today. But you can tell the age of the plugins. Old GUI, classic features, etc. Due to the large number of new wavetable, FM… synths, many of them have become unattractive because of better UIs, more creative features, better sound, etc.
Plus, Absynth 5 has been discontinued, and Massive got a successor with Massive X… The only plugin which is still available in its original version is FM8. The hottest question you ask is: does FM8 still get updates? The answer is yes. Last year Native Instruments released the VST3 version as well as native Apple Silicon M1/M2 support for FM8. So it works also on your latest macOS computer and system. The feature highlights are:

- full-matrix modulation: freely adjustable algorithm structure with six operators plus distortion and analog-style filter operators

FM8 for $10/€10 is a very good deal. it’s a classic of FM synthesis. However, you have to deal with the olf-fashion UI, which is not scalable and not as beautiful as today’s interfaces.

I downloaded the trial. There’s no VST3. And the VST is not native Apple silicon.
Download it from the NI website, it includes VST3 and Apple Silicon
