IEM has published GranularEncoder, a free advanced Ambisonic granular plugin with two operation modes for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
You can also study electronic music. In Austria, there is the ELAK in Vienna and the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics in Graz. The latter is a multidisciplinary research center within the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. And don’t worry, you don’t learn how to master “four on the floor” beats here.
The team and friends of the IEM have created a suite of open-source free JUCE-powered plugins with a strong focus on Ambisonic audio processing. Their latest plugin is a free granular plugin called GranularEncoder.
IEM GranularEncoder
GranularEncoder is a new Ambisonic granular effect plugin that encodes short “grains” of mono or stereo audio into the Ambionsic domain. It distributes the grains around a specified center direction. You can control the size and shape of the distribution.
The plugin offers two types of grain distribution. Firstly, a 3D spherical cap distribution of grains, which offers a controllable spread in azimuth and elevation defined by the Size parameter. Secondly, a 2D circular distribution with controllable spread in azimuth only, allows you to spread the grains more precisely on a specific elevation level.
The latter is easier to operate and works nicely as a creative effect plugin. With the built-in random modulator, you can even delve deeper into the granular world and create moving timbres. There is also a mix aka dry/wet mix parameter. Thus, you can use it as Ambisonic granulator (wet setting), or as an Ambisonic grain delay (mixed setting).
GranularEncoder is part of IEM’s free and open-source plugin bundle. It’s pretty impressive what the bundles include: MultiEQ, MultiBandCompressor, StereoEncoder, OmniCompressor, Fdn Reverb, Dual Delay, and more. Don’t miss these free plugins.
First Impression
Free plugins always get a big like from me. And granular processors a double-like. The plugin looks exciting, mainly because it is granular in surround (Ambisonic).
IEM GranularEncoder is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST, AU, and LV2 plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Intel, and Linux. A VST3 version is currently not available.

Thanks Tom, but no Audio Unit, only VST2, LV2 and standalone.
