Groovesizer MYNAH is a new compact 6-voice polyphonic sampler that lets you record, chop, and perform your sounds anywhere.

It seems we’re currently experiencing the peak season for samplers. Many compact samplers have hit the market in the last few years, some smaller, some larger, some with granular processing, some without.

And here’s another one. Groovesizer has announced MYNAH, a new compact on-the-go sampler that will be available as a DIY project or as a ready-assembled unit.

Groovesizer MYNAH

MYNAH is a new compact, DIY sampler that lets you record, chop, and perform your sounds anywhere. The instrument looks a bit like a retro toy to me, with its red case and white knobs.

According to Grooveesizer, MYNAH uses a 16-bit, 32kHz ADPCM audio engine powered by an ESP32 microcontroller. They promise that it delivers a crunchy, characterful sound of classic samplers.

The MYNAH is a 6-voice polyphonic sampler. You can sample from its dual audio inputs or via the built-in microphone. Samples are stored on a microSD card and loaded into RAM, giving you up to 16 samples per song and over two minutes of total sample capacity.

It also ships with a companion web app that lets you manage and import samples and songs, and export high-quality stems.

Sound Design & Composition

There’s no information on how far you can edit samples. For example, whether you can change the start and stop positions, pitch, or anything like that. However, onboard are real-time and momentary effects such as delay, reverb, filter, stutter, gate, and bit-crusher.

Groovesizer has also incorporated a 16-step sequencer into MYNAH, with which you can create beats and all kinds of rhythms out of your samples. Since it’s a six-voice sampler, each voice will probably have its own sequencer lane.

Whether you’re programming beats, shaping textures, or performing live, Mynah puts serious sampling power in the palm of your hand, says the developers.

MYNAH will be available as a DIY version and a ready-assembled unit. For the DIY version, all you need are basic soldering skills. It includes the PCB, enclosure, and all the components.

First Impression

At first glance, a fun-looking polyphonic sampler for mobile music creation. The feature set reminds me of the Teenage Engineering PO-33 K.O. or the K.O. II. Let’s see what other features are hidden in the sampler and how much it will cost.

Groovesizer MYNAH availability and price TBA.
