Glitchmachines Cataract 2.0 is a sequel to their wild, experimental take on a sample slicer (segment multiplier) with more features and a new user interface.

Ivo Ivanov aka Glitchmachines, stands for crazy, experimental plugins and sample libraries. Here you will find samplers, synthesizers, and effect plugins packed with novel ideas that you won’t find with the big players. Welcome to the wild side of the VST world. The developer of these plugins is Thomas Hennebert, aka Inear Display, an indie company also known for its super unique plugin releases.

Today Glitchmachines released a paid upgrade for their experimental sample slicer/segment multiplier plugin Cataract.

Glitchmachines Cataract 2.0

Cataract 2.0 is a segment multiplier that continues the concept of version 1.0. It introduces a new redesigned interface, a new FX module with a dedicated sequencer, and many refinements. At the core are a pair of customizable “scanner” modules that are basically sample playback engines, each containing two independent sample slots.

These scanners are driven by the DAW clock and dynamically scan over segments of up to four separate audio files. The segments are then distributed in time and sonically manipulated with the multiplexing idea. A highlight about the scanner engines is that you can edit and modulate them down to the smallest detail. You get a wide range of parameters for each slot and scanner, dedicated scan sequencers, LFOs, and more for each scanner.

Then, the XMOD section gives you the option to crossfade, morph or mix between the two audio signals for further sonic flexibility. Glitchmachines also added a brand new FX section to take your sounds even further. It consists of a multi-mode filter (LP/HP), a delay with feedback with clock sync, and five distinct effects processors. Including a crusher, ring modulator, chorus, phaser, and a format filter perfect for vowel sounds.

A dedicated effects sequencer joins these to set them in deep motion. Further, you get a global parameter sequencer that can modulate almost all engine parameters. Glitchmachines ships the plugin with an all-new sample library and 100 ready-to-use presets. Plus there is a built-in randomizer for instant one-click inspiration.

First Impression

Like version 1.0, Cataract 2.0 is a very experimental take on a sampler with a slicer. The plugin is a sound lab for experimental, evolving loops resulting from wild sample manipulations. Glitch, noise, scatter, bleep & blops… Cataract is a wild trip in sampler slicing. And at first glance, it’s a solid upgrade.

Cataract 2.0 is available now for $79 USD and runs as a 64-bit only VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (Intel + M1) and Windows. Version 1.0 users can upgrade for $30 USD. GM says that customers who bought the plugin over their website can purchase the update from the official. Users who bought it at Plugin Boutique can buy the upgrade from their shop.
