Audiority Space Station UM282, a plugin that emulates the iconic Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 reverb & echo unit from 1980s.

Nowadays many music producers have the choice of either using reverbs in hardware or software as a plugin. There are commercial as well as free plugins. There was also a time before plugins. A time where hardware units dominated the reverb market.

One of the special was the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 that used delay techniques to transform a mono signal into a new reverberated stereo signal. Unique for this time. That was not all. It also offered many delay taps while other delay units only had one or two. Due to its fascinating engine, the Ursa effect unit was not only reverb but also delay/echo in one. Now the well-known sound is back, modeled by Audiority.

Audiority Space Station UM282 is a faithful simulation of the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282, an early 80’s echo and reverb unit. Like the original, the plugin uses delay tapes to turn a mono signal into stereo echos and reverbs. 8 taps are used for listening and can be adjusted in pairs using the controls in the audition delay mixer section.  The other taps are used to synthesize the reverberation.

According to the developers, they reduced the audio bandwidth to 20 Hz – 7kHz to achieve the classic sound. There is also a pair of low cut and high cut filters for additional tone shaping. Then, the plugin offers 16 audition delay programs which are available in different categories: rooms, combs, delay clusters and space repeats. The maximum delay time is 255 milliseconds. However, you can extend it to 2,55 seconds in the long mode and thus makes a maximum reverb of 3,5 seconds possible.

Further, it has an echo mode where Space Station UM282 syncs to the DAW tempo with option to turn it off. Audiority also added a useful ducking feature.

If you want vintage reverb timbres and especially the character of the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 in your DAW, you can go past this plugin. For the current price, it’s certainly worth considering.

Audiority Space Station UM282 is available now for an introduction price of 39€ (reg. 65€). It runs as a VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plugin on macOS (Intel, M1) and Windows.
