Soniccouture Flowstate for Kontakt is a new VI that transforms samples using a formant filter bank into a harmonic morphing virtual instrument.

Kontakt instruments often have the reputation of being very limited in what they can do. This is partly true. For example, large orchestral libraries provide composers with mighty instruments that are ready to use and require little tweaking. However, there are exceptions.

Soniccouture has released a Kontakt Player library called Flowstate, which does not limit you to the sounds provided.

Flowstate is a new, fully customizable Kontakt virtual instrument in their experimental lineup. The core uses an engine consisting of a harmonic and more traditional synthesis section.

The exciting part is the harmonic engine, which features a formant filter bank with eight tuned filters and two setting layers. Once set, you can continuously morph the settings from layers A and B and vice versa.

Usually, Kontakt libraries are based on an embedded sample library that works in this fixed environment. Flowstate also uses a library, but it offers the possibility of loading custom samples or loops via drag-and-drop in the engine.

Once you have loaded your sample, Flowstate will instantly transform your source into a harmonic morphing instrument. In addition, you have classic synthesis features like setting the sample start position with a randomization option, tweaking the result with a filter, or adding modulation (envelope/LFO).

The whole thing becomes more complex and versatile thanks to the five harmonic states that are in the engine. You can, therefore, give the harmonic engine (formant filter + synth) five distinct faces, each with different settings that can be morphed between.

Further, you can work with three configurable FX slots with 26 different effects, including reverbs, delays, distortion, compressors, and more. These are global FX and not part of the separate states.

The morphing of the formant filters and the entire states transforms simple samples into beautiful, glassy, harmonic, rich textures.

To get it started, Soniccouture ships Flowstate with 100 presets (NKS patches) and a sample library.

First Impression

Flowstate is an exciting new Kontakt Player library that shows that Kontakt libraries are not necessarily rompler-like instruments. Here, it is a versatile instrument you can rediscover every time with every new inserted sample or loop.

Soniccouture Flowstate is available now for an introductory price of 59€ instead of 99€ until March 14, 2025. The library runs in the Native Instruments Kontakt 7 or 8 Player and Kontakt 7 or 8 full version.
