Moog honors Rush’s Geddy Lee with a new red Minimoog Model D Synthesizer version as a tribute to his musical achievements.

The Minimoog Model D is a legendary Synthesizer that has shaped the music world for many years. Over the last 55 years, it has been used by countless musicians and bands. Even though synthesizers are often associated with electronic music, they have also been used in many rock productions.

One of the most famous rock bands that used the Moog Model D early on was Rush, with frontman and bass/synth player Geddy Lee. It shaped songs like Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, or Xanadu. Moog has today unveiled a Geddy Lee Minimoog Model D version that honors his success and the influence his music had/has in rock music.

The Minimoog Model D Geddy Lee version is based on the current Moog Model D version with all the known improvements. It includes a hot-rodded, enhanced VCA circuit that brings the instrument a smoother and richer sound.

Then, it features modern MIDI integration that seamlessly combines the legendary analog engine with modern connectivity. Also onboard is the added LFO on the left side, which gives you more modulation options than on the original Model D. Plus

For extra playability, the new Moog Minimoog Model D Geddy Lee version also ships with a keyboard with aftertouch support, making it ready for intensive studio sessions and live performances.

The Geddy Lee dedicated version also has features exclusively available on this. This starts with the color. It has a custom satin red finish with metallic flecks that match Geddy’s legendary Grace Under Pressure-era keyboard rig.

Each unit also includes a custom badge on the front and a sticker on the reader of the iconic Rush “starman” logo, making it a truly unique piece.

“It’s a thrill to see the Minimoog Model D in that stunning red, so representative of one of the most fertile periods in Rush’s creative history”, said Geddy Lee. “I’ve always been mad for custom color instruments, many inspired by automotive hues, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out—it’s just so beautiful.

The Minimoog Model D was the first synth that made dreaming big accessible to a schlub like me. Its intuitive design lets you learn waveforms, blend sounds, and experiment with the modulation wheel. That’s its legacy: a fat, sophisticated sound in a package that’s not daunting to get your hands on.”

Rush Extras

There are also some extra goodies in such a special edition. The Geddy Lee Minimoog Model D includes the iconic Rush tracks Xanadu and Jacob’s Ladder on an exclusive 10” red translucent vinyl.

In addition, this comes in special edition packaging designed for this version. It includes a collectible poster, a commemorative manual, and a special kraft gift box. On top of that, you get an individually numbered certificate of authenticity hand-signed by Geddy Lee of Rush.

First Impression

The original Model D is a timeless classic in terms of sound and design. The design has changed little over the years and is still associated with the wood look and brown color. A Minimoog in red has something extra and looks very beautiful.

Like the regular version, the Geddy Lee Model D version is out of my budget. However, I’m pretty sure it will find its customers and end up in some Rush/Geddy Lee fan collections. As a big prog-rock fan, I am glad a synth developer appreciates this niche genre in that way.

The new Moog Geddy Lee Minimoog Model D Synth will be exclusively available at Reverb (US), Anderton (UK), and Thomann (EU) starting today for $5,499 USD. The unit is made in the US.
