In the new smart:reverb plugin from the Austrian company sonible, a complex AI powered engine builds your reverb that fits your input signal
2020 is the year of AI-powered audio plugins. Often you have to be careful whether the AI addition is only a marketing phrase to sell the plugin better or if it’s really useful for the musician. There is a Synthesizer plugin on the market where the former has been confirmed. sonible from Austria is known for doing thing differently. They already showed this with their intelligent EQ plugins.
With their new reverb “smart:reverb”, they continue this idea and also use their AI. In this case, the technology is used to creating custom-tailored reverb by adjusting its processing to the individual characteristics of the input material. This can be very useful for many, as you often do not know whether the reverb fits to the instrument.
Artificial Intelligence Builds Your Reverb
sonible’s approach of computing reverb doesn’t rely on presets or pre-recorded impulse responses but on the source signal. It analyses your audio and creates the reverb based on the spectral and temporal characteristics of the material. This technology also reduces common problems like muddy reverb tails or unwanted resonances in the space.
With the help of an intuitively navigable reverb matrix, the user can quickly find the right sound by morphing through different reverb types (natural, intimate, artificial & rich).
sonible’s smart:engine – an A.I.-based, content-aware system designed on the basis of psychoacoustic principles and extensive hands-on mixing experience – powers the inner workings of smart:reverb. Just like smart:comp and smart:EQ 2, this new plug-in comes with profiles for different audio sources to prime the processing of the smart:engine to the input signal.
Features
- Custom-tailored reverb in just a few seconds.
- Reverb matrix with a wide spectrum of different styles.
- Interactive representation of the reverb’s anatomy.
- Time- and frequency-dependent adjustment options for maximum decay control.
- Time-dependent spread and density control to design the right sound.
- Creative features like Infinite and Freeze for layering sounds.
- Signal-adaptive controls for reverb width, color and clarity.
- Pre-filter EQ to quickly shape the signal.
I’ve watched some videos and it really seems to work. As a user, it is difficult to understand how the process works, but the reverbs all sounded very good and appropriate.
