PPG wavetable synthesis is possible with the new Elektron Syntakt and its firmware 1.4, featuring a new Twinshot dual-layer sample engine.
This week, Elektron released firmware version 1.4 for the Syntakt. The highlight is the introduction of sample playback support via the new Twinshot machine.
However, Twinshot is a traditional sample engine as it uses two distinct layers: one for the transient and another for the body of the sound. The YouTube channel tubesockor shows in his latest video that you can even do PPG-style wavetable synthesis with the new Elektron Syntakt firmware.
PPG Wavetable Synthesis Elektron Syntakt
The Elektron Syntakt does not have a PPG wavetable synthesis engine. However, with limitations and not exactly the same, the new Twinshot makes it possible.
YouTuber tubesockor extracted the wavetables from the original PPG firmware and split them into 64 samples/single-cycle waveforms. Then, import them into the engine using Elektron Transfer.
In addition, you have to set up settings such as putting the second layer, i.e., the body, into a loop by assigning the amp envelope a note sustain part. Plus, you have to tune it down a bit. With the
With the sample selector of the second layer, you now achieve wavetable scanning-like behaviors, similar to those on the PPG or other synths.
An interesting example of how to use the new sample engine. This wavetable trick is not only possible with PPG files but with any wavetable that has been extracted to single-cycle waveforms available on the net.
The new Elektron Syntakt 1.4 firmare is out now.
